Described my issue with Saltburn so well. It wants to be mainstream weird. A scene that's odd in a mainstream movie but is just a bad parody of an actually weird scene from an actually weird movie.

My issue with Saltburn is it didn't really want to be weird. It wanted to dip its toe in the weird pool but not dive in. It wanted to cosplay weird.

I don't care about movies reminding me of other movies, as long as they're good. With that said, I think Midsommar, Get Out, The Menu and Blink Twice are actually very different movies with different themes. It's like comparing movies with an infinite time loop plotline: just because Happy Death Day, Palm Springs and Groundhog Day have the same "gimmick", it doesn't mean that they are formulaic.

Hollywood prioritizes whatever makes the most money, which is why we see the same kinds of movies over and over. If we want more variety, we need to actively support smaller creators that prioritize nuanced ideas over what’s safe.

I have a problem with Get Out being compared to these films

The sort of "slow burn, you only really know what's happening by the end" thriller is definitely getting old. Even last year, movies like Blink Twice and Cuckoo (while I enjoyed them) just felt so structurally similar than the premise of Opus already felt tired by the structure of the trailer

Loved Ayo in this, and it was way funnier than I expected. Hope she does more horror, felt right at home. And the song (from the 90's) was really good!

See the problem with this movie is that we need to get hooked into the cult in the beginning alongside the main character. From the beginning Ariel is suspicious and the cult is automatically creepy and off putting so we never get that slow burn mystery that other cult movies have. Also lead should've been played by Jared leto he wouldn't even need to method act!
