“If Christ isn’t raised from the dead the Christian life isn’t worth living.” Licona

That’s a pretty informative statement. Apparently loving your neighbor as yourself doesn’t mean shit unless you’re gonna get an incorruptible immortal body.

“This must be true, otherwise my religion is invalid” is a terrible argument.

Gospels are theological works, not historical. Saved you 7hrs. You are welcome.

Here are some quotes from Licona's book. We can be sure he's being objective when he looks at the evidence.

_"I was brought up in a conservative Christian home and made a profession of Christian faith at the age of ten."_

_"My desire is for the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus to be confirmed, since it would provide further confirmation of my Christian beliefs."_

_"I confess that my previous research was conducted more in the interest of confirming my faith and for use in apologetic presentations than being an open investigation in which I would follow the evidence where it led me."_

_"I have frequently asked God for his patience and guidance as I have wrestled through the issues. I have been able to experience what I believe was a neutral position for a number of brief periods. During these, I have been so uncertain of what I believe in terms of Jesus’ resurrection that I prayed for God’s guidance and continued patience if the Christianity I was now doubting is true."_

_"I presently enjoy a position of national leadership within the largest Protestant denomination in North America, a position for which I carry influence, am paid fairly and through which I find much satisfaction. I am aware that should my research lead me to the conclusion that Jesus did not rise from the dead I would be dismissed from my position and my employment would be terminated."_ - From Mike Licona's The Resurrection of Jesus: A New Historiogrpahical Approach pp. 130-132

Lemme guess....licona isn't going to concede no matter how badly he loses.

2000 years from now people will be questioning why only the men take out the garbage. I don't have a good answer here.

Christians says the debate to end all debates, yet they are debating between denominations😂😂, oh the irony

If Jesus’ wounds didn’t magically heal and seal up, imagine if he had been decapitated. Think he would have just walked around with a talking head in hand? Would believers find that any less believable?

God I can't think of anything worse than watching Mike Licona for 7 hours.

How can you argue Jesus being raised from being dead when there are totally conflicting stories in the Bible about just about every part of his supposed life? There is no coherent timeline that can be made to make Jesus a historical person. The Bible is an unreliable source. Why would anyone take this seriously?

Derick, (and Dr. Ehrman) an excellent example of legends changing is the death of Davy Crockett at the Alamo. For the longest time, it was told that this "larger than life" character was the last person fighting Santa Anna's army (see the John Wayne movie on this). Then, a diary from a soldier of Santa Anna's army which chronicled how Davy Crockett was captured and then executed. The Disney movie shows a very different story as played by Billy Bob Thornton.
Currently we are less than 200 years away from those events during an era with much higher literacy and even that story was not accurately told.
Something to consider.

Taking 12 years to study non-existent evidence seems a bit excessive.

Wow. I am a Christian who has studied Christian origins for 15 years in my spare time, and I am surprised to find myself in almost complete agreement with what Bart says about Paul’s view of the resurrection body. But - why does Bart not mention that Paul believed that our current bodies are ‘soul-ish’ bodies, and that this seems to place the emphasis on what animates the body, rather than what constitutes the ‘stuff’ of the body?
And why does he not mention that Paul considers the spirit from God, that is within the believers, as the assurance that they will be raised in the spiritual body?

I think that would be interesting to hear his reflections on..

The cost of this debate is nothing compared to what I have given to church over my life. I do find it ironic that the church Mike is part of cannot subsidize the cost of this debate.

Paul said that resurrected Jesus appeared to 500 brothers at one time. Seems like a pretty important event. Why do none of the gospels mention this?

Someone has mentioned Bertrand Russell's unforgettable dealing with all the questions still posed in these issues, a 1927 lecture "Why I am not a Christian". It can be found on youtube (read by an actor, I wonder if anyone can put a name to them) and cannot be recommended highly enough.

Bart has been my go to guy for information from a historical point of view, for years. You're really growing into a trusted source, keep up the great work.

If the resurrection did happened and Jesus appeared to 500 people for 40 days and later ascended to heaven, Judaism is finished and all the Jews would all have become Christians. It just did not happened, just stories and the Jews still don't believe in Jesus and Judaism is still going on strong!!!
