Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is an earth-shattering masterpiece and I’ll explain why in this video! I was also explain why some of the film is shot in black and white. Although this channel is mainly focused on Celtic history, I thought a movie that explores arguably the most important invention in the history of human civilization deserves a video. Cillian Murphy is Irish as well, and we’ve got to celebrate the Irish!
And his performance is where we’ll start. In short, it’s outstanding! He is course plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who is the father of the atomic bomb. He’s most famous for overseeing the Trinity Test, the first detonation of a nuclear weapon in recorded history on the 16th of July 1945, in his role as the Director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, also known as Project Y, a secret laboratory established by the Manhattan Project during WW2.
The entire film hinges on Murphy’s performance, and an average performance would have derailed the entire film. Cillian Murphy has been an extremely talented actor for years, but this performance has cemented him as one of the finest actors working today. Clearly he will be nominated for a Oscar, and rightly so.
With a film that relies so much on close-ups of Murphy, he manages to convey the wrestling emotions of extreme intellect, world-destroying stakes and consequences, and the deepest of moral questions. As the film plays heavily on, Oppenheimer and the other physicists of the Manhattan project set of a bomb that they couldn’t be mathematical certain wouldn’t ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world. And of course, they still pressed the button. And you think you have dilemmas: do I want tea or coffee?
The dichotomy between the quest for the scientist to unlock the secrets of the universe and the moral and ethical questions associated with unlocking these secrets is at the heart of the film. The timing of this movie couldn’t be more fitting as well, considering that AI has gone mainstream in recent months with Chat GPT. The rise of AI is arguably the fusion of the industrial revolution and the invention of the nuclear bomb tied together, and leaders in the field of AI often refer to this time as their Oppenheimer moment.
The film as a whole is a masterpiece, with Murphy supported by an unbelievable cast. Christopher Nolan is the ultimate star however, the writer-director who is one of my favourite directors. If you love Nolan, you’ll love this film. His initial vision of the film seems to have been truly realised on this one. This vision was heavily supported by the visual effects team, headed by Andrew Jackson, who was one of Nolan’s first calls after writing the script.
Pretty much all the visual effects in this film of the quantum world and abstract ideas are practical effects, shot in camera, as Nolan always does. The visualisation of the quantum world and Oppenheimer’s inner thoughts of his world are extremely important in a film that is largely people sitting around talking for large parts – in fairness, sometimes they are standing. And this isn’t a criticism of the film, it’s the nature of the subject matter.
