A video describing how to replace the alternator of a 2000 Toyota Avalon XL. Sorry for the poor lighting. This was done on a cold winter night around midnight in my garage.

If you only have basic mechanical skills like me, this isn't too difficult and should only take about 2 hours and save you hundreds of dollars.

Thank you so very much for this video!!! I am a 52 yr old woman and was able to follow your detailed instructions to replace my own alternator on my toyota!!! You have saved me a ton of cash that repair shops was trying to charge me. Thank You! I also did not want to spill coolant so I did remove the bolt that attaches to the bracket and hose to the left of the alternator, lifted it up and slid the alternator right out! yaay! Again, thank you and God Bless!

Let's be honest this guy rocks, from his camera angling to his detailed straightforward discriptions of his methods. As a 02 Avalon owner I thank you

I have watched numerous videos and have gotten so much advice from people on this alternator But THIS VIDEO made me comfortable enough to Get On It. Wish Me Luck.

I just replaced my alternator this morning following your detailed instructions (THANK YOU!), but I have an addendum to maybe help people get the old alternator out once it's free, and the new one in with far less trouble. As you mentioned in your video, there is a hose support just to the left of the alternator (the side with the belt pulley) screwed down to the sheet metal beneath it that can be released with the removal of a single 10mm screw. Once that support is freed and the little plastic clamp supporting that metal tube is opened up, it can all be slid out of the way, so the hose can now be lifted enough to allow the alternator to easily come out, unimpeded. I sincerely appreciate all your warnings and suggestions to avoid the mistakes you made (I actually do learn from other people's mistakes). Oh, one other thing; that stiff plastic cover on the cable bolted to the alternator comes off fairly easily by CAREFULLY pulling up on the plastic part going down the cable. You may need to pry a little with a slotted screwdriver, but do the prying under that part of the cover that goes down the cable, and not so much on the sides or front part of that cover. I hope this helps add to the success of your very helpful video.

Thanks much for taking the time to post this video. My grandson & I replaced his bad alternator on his 1997 Toyota Avalon without any real difficulties except for removing the plastic cap which cracked for me as well but I managed to put it back over the wire without any problem. It’s guys like you that help the average “Weekend Mechanic Wanna Be” to be able to repair themselves without paying a real mechanic an enormous amount of money to have it repaired. By the way this video encompasses Toyota Avalon years 1997 thru 2000. Thanks again, Jeff

Thanks I was able to replace my alternator following your instructions in under 2 hours. I also was able to get around the hoses, which made the job pretty easy. One thing I did was to use a light wire to tie the belt to one of the hoses after removing it from the alternator. That kept it taught and prevented it from falling off the other two pulleys. That mounting bolt underneath was a pain, though. Couldn't see anything, but finally got it on.

Thanks for the tips..I'm gonna replace the belt tomorrow, hopefully. It's not easy to find videos on this car but I love my Avalon

I thought it was the alternator making the noise, but a friend walked me through turning the AC on and off and we realized it was the AC compressor that was making all the noise--and not just the AC bearing. In any case this video was helpful in knowing how to get the belt loose, then other YouTube videos helped with the AC Compressor replacement.

Good video with lots of nice detail. Thanks. If you choose to drain some coolant there is an easier place. At the bottom of the radiator, just about straight down from the hose that was a problem for you, there is a thumb-screw type of valve, which if you back that out opens a path for the coolant to drain straight down. Put a drain pan down there to capture the coolant, and when you are done with the work, you just put the coolant you drained out back in through the radiator cap until it is full there, and then put any that doesn't fit in the expansion tank. No mess.

Thanks. Helpful. Yes, pull the upper hose off, but drain down coolant half way before, save and replace

Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful. I just replaced the alternator in a relative's Avalon. I found that the alternator can come out to the left and up without removing any hoses. Just have to be patient and careful. :) Thanks again!

Just replaced mines today. The hard part was trying to get the bottom mounting bolt on. Was frustrating but got it. But I didn't have to remove the radiator hose. I just slipped it through the hoses and got it out.

i just changed my alternator and the little bracket that connects to the the two cords has a clip you can unhook instead of taking off the oil hose if you look close you can see where u can pry it off with a small flathead just a heads up for next time

I got a duralast gold alternator brand new, makes a wine I loosened it to try to get rid of it thinking it was too tight but then it squealed with ac on so I know once it squeals it’s too loose so I tightened back again to what seems like a normal tightness and it still makes the noise. Should I tighten it more or is that just how the autozone ones are (have some noise) I don’t wanna overtighten.

i pull mine out yesterday b4 it got dark today im going in unscrew it from what the kid did and resxrew it back. One thing confused me. the tension bolt im trying to figure out where to position it i see no diagrams anywhere. Is the long side with hole suppose to be up or down? Was the block attached to the frame n was the tention bolt n block under the alternator? Because the belt wasnt tightening back like it was
i hope that wasnt a hard question to understand.
Where can i find a picture.
All the while I was trying to unscrew the bolts my neighbor kept interupting and trying to get me to let his brother or cousin to help n i lost focus of the two important bottom bolts.

you can undo the gray bracket thats holding the two wires above it with a flathead. Pull the gray flap out and and pull up. I watched step by step on 3 videos including yours Thanks.
Just because im a woman dont mean that i cant follow directions. and like i told my mom "If you can do it..I can DO IT". Yeah i showed her...lol... she laughed at me when i said i was gonna do it myself. like my neighbor a man was shocked that i was doing in MYSelf. As a matter of fact im gonna make a video showing them fools 😝
