In this video, we interview Dr. Marc Gerdisch, a leading mitral valve surgeon and Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Gerdisch has performed thousands of successful mitral valve procedures using new technologies to minimize patient pain, shorten hospital stays and accelerate patient recovery.

Key questions asked to Dr. Gerdisch during this video include:

1. What is mitral valve disease?
2. Is mitral regurgitation common?
3. What are the symptoms and risks of mitral regurgitation?
4. What are the treatment options for patients?
5. What are the benefits of mitral valve repair vs mitral valve replacement?
6. Do all surgeons perform mitral valve repair? Why or why not?
7. Can the procedure be performed using minimally invasive techniques? If so, how?
8. What are the advantages of minimally invasive techniques for your patients?
9. Can you talk about why and how you treat the tricuspid valve during mitral valve surgery? Are both the mitral and tricuspid valves treated using minimally-invasive techniques?
10. What is your number one piece of advice for patients needing mitral and/or tricuspid valve repair?

I was diagnosed with placque and regurgitation value disorder Aug. 2024. I am going for a CAT the end of this month and will learn more after that. I do not have a cardiologist at this time but am dealing with a Cardiovascular Center. I just turned 81 and other than shortness of breath at times and some heart palpitations which I have gotten medication and high blood pressure that came out of the blue two years ago but now I'm on medication for as well, this is really scary for me.

I have a leaky valve and I’m terrified, I’m a single father of a 7 year old girl and I’m terrified of dropping dead in front of her, and I can’t leave her she needs me, I’m out of breath constantly and getting palpitations all the time, I live in the UK and the NHS has massive problems right now, I’m on a waiting list, I wish I lived in America and had health insurance, I can’t think to the future as I don’t know what’s gonna come, and I’m terrified for my daughter, I wish I was rich and could get this operation done, I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I was once the British champion freestyle wrestler, I’m still relatively fit, ( until I started getting shortness of breath) I’m absolutely shocked that this has happened to me, I consider my self strong and brave, but ever since the symptoms have got far worse I look at my daughter while she’s asleep and feel like I’m gonna cry, I realise I’m not the brave strong guy I always thought

I had minimally invasive mitral vale repair in 2010. I am well and active now. I had atrial fib after the surgery. Took meds for a year. Then doc took me off meds. Question…is is uncommon to develop a fib after surgery? I didn’t know to expect that. Wouldn’t have changed my mind about the surgery… best decision my cardiologist helped me to make!

Finally... I'm so tired of doctors telling me to calm down and take a beta blocker as I watch my heart deteriorate. What I need is a solid fix.

All of these videos by expert surgeons say go to a mitral valve specialist center for repair if possible. It's not something to mess around with a mitral valve that is not as common as other heart valve problems. My cardiologist said it's not complex surgery.
