My grandfather had some cops come into the laundry mat he was using and accuse him of robbing the coin collector which they had rigged with a chemical that a blacklight would reveal. His hands did glow under the blacklight but he knew a little about chemistry and showed them that laundry detergent produced the same effect. Moral of the story, don't just surrender to whatever the cops say without looking for alternative explanations.

Most of the times CSI units aren't looking for blood with it but looking for bleach traces. This might also just be the TV shows but that's what I remember it for...

TVs shows yes but real life crime shows definitely talk about bleach being used to clean up a scene because it glows.

The root vegetable thing is commonly used in western blots (a method in biology to detect proteins). The second of the two antibodies used in the detection stage carries an enzyme from horseradish that triggers the luminol so you don't have to mess around with radioactive stuff

We figured out the hard way that luminal doesn’t just glow with blood. Shot at a deer when I was a kid and we happened to have a product sold to hunters to find blood. Super dark and no good flashlight. Sprayed it and blood was everywhere. Sprayed some more, blood everywhere. Then we realized all the patches blood was on the shape of leaves. I think it was the oak leaves in particular that set it off. Haha

long story short probably missed the deer and never found blood.
