Chinese workers are starting to rebel against '9-9-6' culture

Many Americans are enjoying a long holiday weekend and taking a break from their typical eight-hour work days. In China, the government officially caps workers days at eight hours a day but a so-called "9-9-6" schedule is pressuring some workers into 12-hour days, six days a week. Elizabeth Palmer reports.

Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs. The broadcast has earned a prestigious Peabody Award, a Polk Award, four News & Documentary Emmys, three Daytime Emmys and the 2017 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Newscast. The broadcast was also honored with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award as part of CBS News division-wide coverage of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Working too many hours actually reduces productivity, innovation, creativity. Some companies started reducing hours and perks . Happy employees are productive employees.

I quit a job a few months ago because they wanted me to work Monday through Sunday. I needed a life too. Good luck to the sucker he replaced me.

This is rediculous. You are hurting your health, family, rest and creative think time.
Work without pay is slavery.

12hrs work + 9hrs sleep. Leaves you 3 hours of personal time. Which will be spent getting ready for work again. 😂

Ha, I use to do 12 hour shifts 6 days a week. Let me tell you, at that point you are no longer living. Sure, the overtime stacks to a hefty sum... but in the end quality of life is much more important. Do this only if you need to work yourself out of a hole, but never as a permanent way of life. Though, please understand that this type of thing is going on here in America aswell.

Say what you want - when you are over worked- sick - the company goes on w/out a blink of eye - balance is the key AND I take my own Siesta!

It's no different here in America. We are slaves and work like dogs. And for what? The sad part is many of us are stuck, companies see us as disposable and replaceable, and to them cheap labor is more important than longevity. I know many who have health issues now because they don't have time to take care of themselves and fear of losing their job.
So it's funny how we like to compare ourselves to big bad China, yet we are facing the same issues here. Low pay, no overtime pay, work you till you mentally break or die from stress.

40 hours a week is already too much. You see diminishing returns on productivity a little over 30.

I was a sales executive making 6 figures working 10 hour days....eventually, I burned out and resigned. I took a pay cut with my new job, but at least now I have a more balanced life.

Why can't 3 days off be the standard?

I wouldn't work 6 12-Hour work days a week for a Million Dollars. My Life is more Important than any business, period.

Damn! We need to think about the mental health of the employees?!

Yeah, a lot of people here are making comments about Chinese workers, and the hours they have to work. I can tell you that so many people here in the US are working way more than 40 hours a week; with multiple jobs!!! This is a reason why the unemployment is at 'so-called record lows'.

i used to work in Japan and i know how these guys feel. Going to work at 7am and going home at 10pm including Saturdays. i gained 45 pounds in just a year because i could only eat convenience store chicken and bento. Literally no time to cook, much less go grocery shopping. You only get sundays off which you'll probably spend entirely sleeping.

I used to get hammered alone while playing Dark Souls games every saturday night at wake up at Sunday afternoon (no wonder it took me 5 months to beat the Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne). Looking forward to the next "weekend" lol.

China has over 1 billion people, they will always find someone else to work 12 hours a day . The best way out is to gain skills which are irreplaceable, then you have a better negotiating preferences.

Am I an American. I am out at 8 hours. Not a minute later. I dont care if I am the first to leave. I do more work than my co-workers anyways.

This is inefficient. It’s been proven that after 6 hours, workers are not as efficient and begin making more errors. This is why American created 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift.

This is true, I am Chinese, and I disagree with the 9-9-6 culture, if workers are doing that. They have to be compensated really well, and also have a long term guaranteed in the job position, where they have to take turns, or take it for a short period of time, and have a right to get to do 8 hours a day, and five days a week.

“Tech employees in SV get perks like free food and unlimited vacations. Not so in China.“ These kinds of general statements are never true.

I’m sure if it was a 69-69-69 work schedule everyone would be working 24/7
