Airfix have been doing a run of these budget starter sets for a while now - normal kit but hugher numbers. Whilst I'm sure it helpe bring new customers to Airfix, is it worth the risk to quality control?

It was these starter sets in Aldi that got me back into the hobby after a 45 year break.

Really enjoyed this as I can't resist buying these whenever they're in Aldi/Lidl but had no idea they were specifically made or re-tooled just for sale in these stores, completely agree with binning the paints and glue (or at least storing them in a shoebox under the bed along with the rest of the crap), the brush is worth keeping, with a bit of patience they turn out to be be cracking little models, anyway thanks again 👍

What’s wrong with using the tube of Poly Cement? It’s not yet failed me when I’ve needed it!

I built this a while ago had no fit issues, has regards painting the engine detail the fw 190 fan means it's not really visible anyway even in larger scales

Not a bad little kit, I found some fit issues with the nose panels, but overall it went together well. My pitot tube survived, some of the gun barrels didn't!

What do you expect for 6 quid?!.. I’ve been back into it since lockdown and done most of these. No complaints from me, so much better than we had when I was a kid in the 70s.

To be fair, I don’t think the faults that you pointed out, like the pitot tube and the engine are not peculiar to the starter set - they would be like that in the full model too.

There are genuine simplifications in starter sets though, you mentioned one, a simpler set of decals, but sometimes there are parts removed. Two examples are the Sherman Firefly and Tiger I tanks which only come with the one piece tracks, the sprue that contains the detailed tracks is not included and unfortunately that sprue also includes some other detail parts - for example the Sherman lacks the front ledge, stowage and some pioneer tools.

A great review as usual. Very entertaining...

I've built this and but for the usual bit of fettling here and there, you can't go wrong for £6 or whatever it was. Obvs the paint and glue went straight in the bin 😂

Looks pretty good to me. At least it has a separate engine fan.

you said you never wash the sprues, but the one time i didn't because i thought "what diffference does it make?" my typhoon was so hard to paint.

I think theres too much snootiness in the modelling fraternity these days.Everything has to have the correct rivet sizes, and you must weather it god forbid. When most older people got into it, we just wanted basically a "toy" that you had the excitement of gluing together and then going out with your mates and running up the road making engine sounds and maching gun sounds. However, historical accuracy seems to fail.I see nowadays too many Luftwaffe aircraft made without swastikas on the tail fin.Its supposed to be FUN, not an exercise in being anally retentive.

I am forever cutting pilots legs off at the knees to get them in 🤣
That spinner swirl decal is a nightmare

Am surprised you didn't paint it in French colors 🤔

Really good work-I liked and subscribed. My channel's modeling has lately been planes and submarines :) so I appreciate!
