Welcome to another episode of ✨What’s That?✨ Ever wondered what tools were like in the 1800s?

This is a beam drilling machine or ‘boring machine’ was an essential tool for any farm in the 1800s. It was used on the McLeod farm and was used for drilling holes in timber during the barn/house framing process.

The operator placed the drill on top of the beam they wanted to drill a hole in, positioned it as needed and then sat down, sandwiching the drill between them and the beam. They would then crank the handles which would lower a drill bit into the beam, one turn of the crank would rotate the bit one full rotation.

Thanks for watching ✨What’s That?✨ We’ll see you next time!

Would I be able to get detailed pictures of this drill? I have the same model but the upper lock and some random hardware is missing and I would like to bring it into working order.
