Any reason you couldn't use a pair of end cut pliers? Seems like they would cut a nail flush without setting your attic on fire.

We use safety glasses AND a full face shield over safty glasses and try not to be directly under area or where sparks are flying to avoid chance of metal getting in eyes. Also on breaks be VERY careful when taking shield and glasses off with face pointed down to brush metal shaving out of hair and face area while your eyes are closed. If you ever get metal in your eyes you will wish you've done these extra safety measures !

I’m kind of hesitant to use an angle grinder in my attic. Lots of potential for fire. Especially for an old rough cut framed home.

What we need to invent for you is a longer handled carpenter's pincers, (or just use cheater bars) and have the pincers with carbide pinching edges. Maybe someone makes one already. Bolt cutters don't get close enough. Welders' blankets might make you feel a little more confident with the grinder going.

I had to cut off some nails and put the guard back on my battery powered angle grinder and it gave me a guide to lay against the wood to steady it. The cutoff wheel didn't grind the wood and just made black burn marks. I may try a diamond cutoff wheel. It needs a thin metal or plastic shim (like imagine a round CD on the front side of the cutoff wheel against the wood that's free to spin) That may be possible with some washers and shims,
