I Spent 48 Hours On The Edge Of The World

This time, I'm spending 48 hours at the edge of the world. Foula, nestled in the Atlantic waters and part of the Shetland Islands, is one of the UK's most remote permanently inhabited islands. Home to thousands of seabirds, hundreds of hardy sheep, and the second highest sea cliffs in Britain, this wild and isolated place is where around 30 people call home.

In this video, I share how to get to Foula and my stay at the Ristie Guesthouse on the island's north side for two nights. While on Foula, I attempt to hike the big sea cliff called Da Kame, encounter Shetland ponies and puffins, enjoy a guided walk with the Foula Ranger, and nearly get blown away by high winds and heavy rain.

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

dont ever apologize for any part of the production - you make a very high quality product, there is nothing wrong with a more "gritty" part, its actually cool

Love love those puffins. Adorable. So are the sheep and horses. You can get a real sense of the island by the woman tour guide. Her life was so hard just to get water. What a Renaissance Woman!! Wind, rain, fog or birds life goes on. No time to rest. Loved the video.

Thank you for braving the swooping birds, wind and rain for making and sharing this wonderful episode! The puffins, sheep and Shetland ponies are awesome to see. The ranger walk with Sheila was great! Ruth, you are the perfect tout guide. I love the history, local facts and travel information you share about these wonderful locations in Scotland. 👍😃

Right. When visiting Foula, bring a tennis racket to defend yourself against the attack birds.

You finally got to see the puffins. You were able to capture some wonderful shots of those beautiful birds. The Shetland ponies seemed to really enjoy your company…very heart warming.

I used to have a (mainland) croft with coloured Shetland sheep and the Shetland Sheep from Foula are quite sought after because they have some of the most interesting colours and coat patterns!

I felt bad for you being so cold and wet, but also really enjoyed seeing Foula. So beautiful, and….. puffins! ❤ Love your videos!

Ruth, you are Scotish brave. I was taken by the beautiful scenes. The quality of the video is outstanding. We all feel that we are there with you. The movement of the air over head by the birds wings. Love those ponies. Thank you for staying out of the dangerous rock formation. We need you to continue your Scotish journeys. Much adored.

Thank Ruth for the exceptional experience. Your ‘Birds’ encounter was way more real than the Hitchcock flick. Loved the Shetland ponies segment. The story here is my Great-grandfather brought the first Shetland ponies to North Carolina and gave my Mom one when she was a girl. I remember she told me ‘They bite!’ Glad you avoided that! Thanks again.

Puffins, winds, rain, cliffs, ponies and more. Sounds like a great place to visit. Maybe not in winter though. :)

Title reminds me of the great Irish film the field when the bull McCabe is heading to the cliffs with the cattle and taoghe says where you going Da and he answers to the edge of the world.
