What Happened With HTC? (History Of HTC)
How did the HTC end up in this current situation? To find the answers, we have to go all the way back to the company's beginnings, more precisely, 1997.
Cher Wang and H.T. Cho founded the company in 1997. and it was initially a manufacturer of notebook computers, one year later, in 1998, the company started designing some of the world's first touch and wireless hand-held devices.
And here we are in the year 2008, when things are starting to get more interesting.
Year before, in 2007, Apple released their first iPhone ever and just one year later, Google's Android operating system was released and the first Android phone with the new OS was the HTC Dream aka T-Mobile G1.
While it didn't exactly set any record sales at the time, HTC Dream started a mobile revolution that would see Android OS today dominating the entire industry.
They released another Android powered device the same year - HTC Magic, and the company was ready for a new chapter.
In 2009, HTC released their third Android based device called HTC Hero, and it was the beginning of the HTC that we know today. Industrial design, unique look and good specs. People were starting to really like HTC's new approach to the smartphone market.
Around that same time, HTC released what was going to be their last phone based on the outdated Microsoft operating system - HTC HD2.
With the Microsoft partnership coming to an end, HTC completely shifted their focus to the Android operating system for the upcoming years.
HTC quickly established themselves as one the top new Android powered smartphones you could buy on the market, so in 2010. Google announced that they were now partnering with HTC to launch the Nexus program.
Google Nexus One was built and designed by HTC while Google was in charge of the software and clean stock Android operating system.
Android 2.1, 3.7" screen, 5MP camera and microSD card were one of the main features of the phone at the time, and the phone was generally well received by the public and critics.
It's worth mentioning that later that year Philip K Dick's estate claimed that the Google Nexus One infringed on its intellectual property, and at the same time Apple also took HTC to court over some of the design issues.
Next year, in 2011. Google decided to part ways with HTC and Samsung simultaneously started dominating the Android market with their devices, so Google choose to continue their Nexus line in partnership with Samsung.
Company’s next flagship device for the 2011 was the HTC Sensation, but the upgraded XE model was the real star of the show, it featured 4.3" display, industrial metal build and great sound quality, thanks to their new partnership with Beats (which are now owned by Apple), and you we're also given the iBeats headphones in the box alongside the device.
In 2012, HTC released several different phones - One X, One S and One V.
HTC One X was their flagship model for that year and it was positively received by the critics and media.
Beautiful, premium looking polycarbonate design, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sense UI 4.0 and 4.7" display and quad-core nvidia chipset. But HTC decided to make one more version of that phone, it was called HTC One XL and the main difference was that the XL model was powered by Qualcomm dual-core chipset contrary to the One X quad-core Nvidia chipset.
Altought the phones were well received and offered some great specs and features of the time, during 2012, HTC lost most of their U.S. market share due to increased competition from Apple and Samsung, HTC only accounted for 9.3% of the United States smartphone market as of February 2013. Chief Executive Peter Chou had informed executives that he would step down if the company's newest flagship phone, the 2013 HTC One, had failed to generate impressive sales results.
And here we are in 2013 when their next flagship HTC One was released.
Precise and premium metal body, 4.7" Full HD display, Snapdragon 600 processor and impressive BoomSound audio quality with two front-facing speakers.
Thanks to many leaks of the HTC One before the official release, video leaked out with Peter Chao calling the device HTC One M7, and the name is still stuck in public till this day.
It's important to give HTC a huge credit for this phone, because many tech enthusiasts consider the One M7 to be one of the most iconic Android phones of all time, its design was unmatched at the time, and when you compared it to the Samsung Galaxy S4 that year, it's was clear which one had looked more premium and better.
