Well what can I say this video will not disappoint but really it will, for me and many many others who have had this issue.

The Yamaha die cast defective lug hit me hard for the first time while tuning it up on camera, it was like a gunshot going off and as soon as it happened I knew it happened to me.....now the search starts for a new lug.

It doesn't matter whether it's 'cranked' or not - it shouldn't happen. A quality snare - any snare - should be able to handle high tunings easily. That's terrible.

Happened to me too! The big problem I had was that yamaha (italy) doesn't have anymore this kind of lugs. New golden lugs are mounted the opposite: the place that has to be up is down.
I solved it giving the snare to an expert that made a new hole in the snare so i could buy the new lug model.
But it happened more than one time, so, i changed all of them and made the work to all the snare

All of them have the same issue. It's definitely a design flaw. it happened to me too and I took apart all the parts, filled all the screw holes with wood, re-drilled it for 8 lugs instead of 6, and mounted a new set of lugs with 2 screws each instead of only one. New 8 lug die cast rims too. A lot of work but it really paid off. I love that snare.

Super sorry about your drum, that sucks! Have just found your channel and really enjoying the content. Good stuff my friend 👊💯

I bought this drum when it first came out, before i became a Yamaha endorser in around 1994. I used the h*** out of it in all kinds of conditions, tunings etc. I also have a 1997 maple custom kit that i still use a lot and i never had these kinds of issues with any Yamaha drum or kit I ever had. Enjoying your channel!

It's funny, I only just saw a photo of Dave Weckl holding one of these things, and I thought "what the heck is that - it has a bigger snare mechanism than my old Pearl FF". Then I came here to see it in action. It does sound really nice, but I think I'll stick with my Pearl Free-Floater.

Wow ... sorry to see the complete combustion of the lug. The snare was sounding so good.

So what did you end up replacing the lug with? I have one and the same thing has happened to me 2 times, I found a store that ordered me some, put em on and no time later had a couple more break. I’d love to use the snare it’s been just sitting and collecting dust for about 10 years.

Will the lugs on my Aluminum Dave Weckl do the same? I'm on my way to detune all the lugs asap.

Dave should be ALL over this! His rep is on the line and knowing his personality, he would be the one to call Yamaha over this! This will ruin his day if he sees this...

The same thing happened to my Akira Jimbo a few years back (2011/2012, but I’m leaning towards 2011 - I reached out to Yamaha December 2012 via email), and it has been benched ever since. I was given the following part number for that drum, which is U0030950. It appears that the design is similar, with the single pin. All twelve lugs on the Akira Jimbo needs to be replaced. You know what they told me when I presented this issue to them? They told me “$16.99 per lug casing and it does not include the insert, and there may be a shipping charge but you would need to ask the parts department when placing the order.”

I still have the original email communications that were sent to them, including photographic evidence of the product defect. Upon review of the photographs, there appears to be a crack in the finish where the receiving hole is located, and I’m hoping that it’s just that, and not the shell itself.

Great customer service by not standing behind an obvious product defect!

It is a shame these lugs were defective Richie, because it really is a great sounding drum. Especially the Low Tuning....

Is that just the 13? Or is the 14 prone to failure as well? I’m guessing the 14 will spread the tension over more lugs, but if the lugs are still 1 pin design then I’m guessing the 14 will also fail eventually. Got my 14 many years ago - no problems - yet...

I have a similarly aged Maple Custom snare drum that has almost all new lugs on it. I've had it for years. I'm not a heavy player, nor do I tune my drums very high. It's frustrating being that it is a sensational sounding drum.

Are the lugs solid brass or simply brass plated ? For the entire lug to simply shatter under medium tension is odd. I agree with you it’s likely just a defect in design. Possibly material as well.

It happened to my yamaha vinnie snare as well. Guess I m not the only one. But that weckl snare sounded great just too bad for shitty lugs, and to get that particular spare lug is really hard to find or source for it.

This is actually common thing on my starclassic maple drum kit i have replaced 4 of these on my tom toms so far, but tama sc have 2 screws on one lug so it never snaps off like that and you can continiue the gig, one screw end up inside the drum so it just rattels little bit.
