Two different cicada broods will simultaneously emerge across the U.S. this spring for the first time since 1803. Dr. Sammy Ramsey, who studies all things insects at the University of Colorado Boulder, joins CBS News to explain what these bugs will do, and what you can do to prepare.

This dude was so proud of his active life style, that he hung his bike up as his backdrop!! 😂😂 Love it!!

“I remember playing with their exoskeletons”

lol somewhere in an alternate universe there’s a cicada talk show host reminiscing about the care free days of playing with human skeletons

The most meditative noise on the planet. Lived in Iowa, and almost every year it's loud and relaxing. People there say it's just a sound of summer.

I used to think the sound they make was the power lines most of my childhood.😂

I remember the last time these suckers were out, I took the top down on my convertible one sunny day on my lunch break. When I got to the cafe, one of the patrons politely informed me that I had a live cicada stuck IN MY HAIR. I'm not interested in having these things back.

I get the feeling some commenters have never experienced a swarm of cicadas. Remember, sometime in the 1980s?, in Falls Church, VA, was horrible. Had to screen the front of the cars because we drove thru walls of cicadas. People had to use umbrellas when walking thru the walls of flying cicadas. The ground was covered with inches of crunchies, making walking hazardous and creepy. Can’t remember how long it lasted, couple weeks?

I visited the US in 2012 and in a small town called McGaheyvislle-VA I saw a swarm of cicadas. The crows were having a fill. I found the sound of these cicadas much less low and trebly than the ones here in Brasil, which sound very much like an electric saw.

Congrats to the reporter for having enough brain cells to say "exoskeleton". It's a rare thing!

I grew up outside of Phoenix and every spring and summer you could hear a quiet hum of cicadas everywhere. Then they disappeared and haven't been seen in more years than I can remember. I miss that gentle hum.

I'm from Maryland. Something similar to this happened in spring of 2021 here. I remember being able to hear their calls mush together in the distance during early mornings in June. That is, until the cicadas started calling in my neighborhood. They were so loud, and they were EVERYWHERE.
