Correction: it wasn’t missiles in 2022, it was a spacecraft specially designed to ram into the asteroid at 14, 000 mph. Some early based asteroid deflection options discussed using missiles/explosives, but NASA did not end up using these methods. Sorry for the mixup at the end

Also NASA has a whole department dedicated to this type of thing called Planetary Defense. Their whole thing is coming up with solutions to this exact problem

Yah and once another huge asteroid came a long time ago and hit earth and since it was so powerful it could’ve been how dinosaurs went extinct

my classmates were talking about this and they weren't even worried, they just laughed and said "yeah, we're cooked" 😭

For those wondering, the region where the asteroid *_might land_* is literally mostly water; excluding the Indian Subcontinent (the actual only area where there might be panic), the biggest thing you should worry about instead is the potential of a tsunami, which might not even impact you when it actually hits 😭🙏

Latest estimation is 1/59, 000 chance to hit Earth. We're good lol

Sean is a real one for actually telling us comforting news about the asteroid _not_ killing us, lol

"Here's why you shouldn't worry" Proceeds to tell us how a similar sized asteroid had released 1000x more energy than an atomic bomb

Plus, it all depends on it's material. We only have to worry if it's iron. Ice or anything else should be fine and I'll burn up in the atmosphere.

The astroid is called Bennu, and it actually contains building blocks to life

also: its more likely to land in the ocean than on land. which does suck, but considerably less damage to buildings than direct impact
