I was taught if you can make your variable positive then you should do that, hence add 4x to both sides first. I know it's not a big deal, but that's how it was explained to me.

I Just go straight from
4x-20=10x-2 -> -18=14x
If it was more complex I wouldent calculate it together immediately but rather have it as seperated numbers in this equation it would be -20+2=10x+4x
But these numbers are easy enough to do it immediately
And it doesn't matter what side the variables go on you just put them where it's the easiest and most convenient to put them
