After all this years, i still feel the original Ayanami death (well, not the original "original" but you guys get it). It's something Aerith level, which i'll never forget. So in this scene i was on the edge of my seat thinking "please let this time be different, please this time be different, i already was fucking 25 years, it's enough pain, please this time be different". Ergo, this scene is a fucking masterpiece

2:25 something intetesting that just came to my mind: here we can see that Rei has in her hand that walkman that Shinji had (and threw in the trash can). In my opinion that means that she really loves him and he is someone important for her, because when Rei takes with her an object that used to belong to someone else, it means she loves that person. That's the same thing that happened with Gendo (with his old glasses). That means that now Gendo is not the only person that has a special place in her heart, now Shinji has one too.
That's just my interpretation, and also they didn't focus on the walkman without a reason (in Eva every detail has a reason), maybe that was the message
