Why Religious Married Couples Are Happier | The Matt Walsh Show Ep. 264

Today on the show, in a shocking development, the NYT published an article claiming that religious women are happier in their marriages than non religious women. I believe this is true, but why is it true? We’ll talk about it. Also Republicans want to raise the smoking age to 21. 18-year-olds can still die on the battlefield or be executed, but they aren't old enough to buy tobacco products apparently. I’ll talk about why this is very stupid. And finally, what’s the preferable living situation — urban or rural?

The more I worked to make my wife happy the happier she made me.

I read a book that said that couples shouldn't look at what their spouse should do, but focus on their own task. If they do their own task, things get done. One might do more sometimes, but it's Not about keeping track. It's about commiting ourselves to each other so we have a strong relationship.

My marriage has been better since accepting that it is not equal. Sometimes I have to work harder, sometimes my husband has to work harder. It flips back and forth and no one keeps score. A lot less stressful and less resentment.

I drink beer, my friends drink beer, I liked beer, I still like beer.

12:30 As a woman who spent most of my life around mostly-atheistic progressives (and am now a conservative Catholic), my experience was of misery among the elitist progressives (both awful patterns of behaviour from male progressives, and pathological distress in the female progressives), and on the contrary authentic joy among the religious conservatives: Noble and respectful and charitable behaviour from the men; lively mental, emotional, and action-oriented engagement from the women.

Another perspective that comes to me is, the progressive women seem trained to WANT to be distressed, and to want to find problems where none might even exist. It was chronic instability, of emotions, lifestyle, patterns of behaviour... without being tethered to even a belief in objective truth, even their very minds seemed chronically unstable and unable to find or hold onto logically coherent thoughts. Whereas the religious women I know save their emotional and psychological reserves for *real-world* challenges (like the struggle against our own sins; like inability to conceive in marriage; like the health of family members; like serious vocation/career decisions) and manage to face those actual challenges head-on with actual courage, virtue, peace and joy. And stability of their own personhood.

There's such a world of difference between talking to a religious conservative woman, and talking to a progressive atheist woman. It's genuinely sad, because the atheistic progressive woman is typically so confused and chronically unhappy. I hope we're all praying for them, because the evidence doesn't lie: God gives the joy that cannot be taken away.

Matt Walsh could be a stand up comedian in another timeline, very funny when he tries to be.

Amen, Matt! That servant's attitude has made my honeymoon last through the first 2 years of marriage so far.

You know, my whole life my dad has had a beard (for as long as I can remember), and then one day a couple of years ago he shaved his beard. He kept the mustach, he's always had the goatee-mustach combo and then he shaved the goatee off. For a moment I didn't recognize my own father.

Matt, please refocus your camera. I can read the titles of the books on your shelf in the back, but can't see your eyes. Thanks!

The drinking thing. I live in Denmark and you can legally buy alcohol at age 16. We statistically have some of the drunkest teens in the world. Like to a point of total stupidity. Teeny tiny Denmark. So no to drinking before you’re an adult. I personally think you should be allowed to do whatever you want at 18. 16 is too young, 21 is an odd age for anything. If you can vote and go to war at 18, you should be able to grab a beer also.

However where does sacrifice come from?
The husband is called to sacrifice his life for his wife. The example is Christ sacrificing for us.

Your brain doesn't stop developing until you are 25. Acts like drinking & drugs are even more destructive when you are younger. Smoking. Obviously the more years you smoke, the worse.

People who attempt to live a life of service are generally happier, yes.

16:15 what I was told throughout school was that when the drinking age was lower, the rate of drunk driving accidents and fatalities was much higher. A lower drinking age makes the country less safe.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought in general religious people were happier"

Thank you very much for speaking to men's responsibilities within a marriage, family and community. I've also seen secular marriages to feminists flourish because regardless of religion, some men do have it in them to be great husbands. Whenever I ask a man in a great marriage what their advice is they usually say 'I have no idea, my wife is amazing.'
