- Regular speed (Down-The-Line) / 3000 fps (Face-On) / 68,000 fps (Ball Impact). Amazing high speed video showing the ball compress on the clubface. Notice how Tiger is able to maintain a forward leaning clubshaft WELL past impact. Is this the secret to hitting the "Stinger"? Please leave your comments...
- Tiger Woods talking to his son, Charlie: He suggested to his son that he shouldn’t study his dad’s swing. Instead, Tiger apparently thinks more highly of Rory McIlroy’s moves. “I told [Charlie], ‘Don’t copy my swing. Copy Rory’s,’ ” he said. “Have you ever seen Rory off balance on a shot? No. Not ever. You can swing as hard as you want, but you need to have balance.” This coming from the greatest golfer to have ever played...

that close up shot at impact is amazing, that ball was hit perfectly...it takes unbelievable hand eye coordination to hit it that well

The side-on slow-mo is borderline *freakish*. Love how you can see the whole upper-body rotating through the motion to generate power and then the head is just DEAD still. Amazing.

LOL when I was a kid I used to think I could hit stingers. I was just blading irons like an idiot, but I truly thought I had the technique down.

Imagine taking an iron off the tee on a 500 yard par 4 lol must be nice to be good at golf!

I caddied at The Olympic Club back in 2012 and it was amazing to watch the likes of Tiger, Rory, Webb, and Furyk play the course

That impact is unreal. I'd take a 3 putts on half of my rounds next year if I could pure a shot like that just once

At 0.25 speed it's crazy seeing the ball compress when hit.

So pure such an athletic swing no other sport is beautiful as golf.

There are two factors that control the lanch angle and those are dynamic loft and attack angle. Dynamic loft is the king of the hill in this particular case, attack angle can have an impact on your lanch angle. So if you want to lanch the ball low and keep it fairly low which Tiger does with his stinger, you want to hit down on the ball a substantial amount and keep the dynamic loft to a minimum, this will give you a low lanch and the ball will not balloon up in the air.

Spot on! I actually coined the term spin loft when Fredrick the creator of trackman was explaining how spin was created and calculated.
He said he liked "Spin loft" and decided to use it.

My small claim to fame

this showed me just how much club head speed is the hands and arms, and how little is the body. I refuse to accept the general wisdom on YouTube that a big turn is a major factor...yes it must add a few percent, but just watch his hands working

that ball-striking is from another planet

I think you're missing the point. The hardest part isnt hitting the 2-iron (which is crazy hard), its hitting his stinger shot which is just pure sex

No, the secret is the shallow angle of attack + the forward lean; trackman coined this "spin loft." Essentially spin loft is the dynamic loft minus the angle of attack. So let's guess that his 2 iron has 17* of loft and his dynamic loft from delofting the clubface is 13* and his angle of attack is 2* down his spin loft would be 15* (13 - (-2) = 15). So want to hit it low and solid? Deloft without hitting down so much.

The shaft lean is what makes these guys pros. Tiger just does it better then anyone!

Trackman did a study and concluded that the more angle of attack doesn't create more backspin because angle of attack counteracted by the de-lofting of the golf club which is caused by hitting down on the ball. So even though the angle of attack increases backspin, the delofting action decreases the backspin because the spinloft gets reduced. If you did hit down on the ball a lot but you kept a lot of loft on the face (high dynamicloft) that would increase the spinloft.

I can't keep my feet that still when I'm PUTTING

You are correct, hitting down in itself doesn't add spin which is a common misconception...that's why there is spin loft. However hitting down does increase the spin loft just like hitting up reduces spin loft (relative to dynamic loft). We are both correct in our points, however if you still want to hit down the normal amount and still hit a stinger you'll have to deloft the club a lot more than if you hit down less not to mention the path issues you'll have with still hitting down a lot.

Anyone who wants to play the stinger, can easily do it. It's a bit tricky to start with but I'm 17 and play off 15-20 (somewhere in between) and it's one of those shots I can rely on now. My best advice is turn both your feet facing your target a little, almost so when you look down your feet are like '\ \' then move the ball nearer to your back foot. Grip down the club a bit and keep your left arm straight at impact, that should keep the angle down. Then just watch that ball fly away!
