Hurricanes and typhoons are the same weather phenomenon: tropical cyclones. The weakest tropical cyclones are called tropical depressions. A tropical cyclone gets a name and becomes a tropical storm at maximum sustained winds of 39 miles per hour. It becomes a hurricane, typhoon, tropical cyclone, or cyclone at 74 mph, depending upon where the storm originates in the world. There are five strength categories, depending on wind speed.
