This is very helpful, thanks. We are on our 4th piece of red oak from Home Depot. I wish I'd watched this first. It is difficult to find a good piece based on your explanation of grain qualities. Also, other sources I've seen did not talk about leaving the back alone, shaping only the belly. We shaped both, I'm sure contributing to their breaking.
I'm finding that there are some really complex physics going on. Type of wood, grain, taper, shape, draw length, etc. all have to work together. I'll keep trying! thanks again. One of my fails involved using regular fiberglass resin that I now know is not flexible. (I have some G-flex on order.)

maybe use a square to make sure the tree is plumb or use a plumb line?

you measure 1.75 above because when you draw a bow, AMO length is measured from the  the deepest part of the handle.

What is the inner tube for, holding it in place while it dries? Shouldn't you just use a clamp?

Could you tell me what the dimensions are for the wood you used? By eyeballing it, it looks to be about 48 inches long

Thank you for this. The cheapest tillering tree I found online was 20 dollars...

The better way to make sure it's straight?  Use a level ;).

The 1 3/4" accounts for the thickness of the bow staff.
