Eric brings a field grown Kishu Juniper into his bonsai workshop to clean-up the wood and determine his next steps in designing this tree. He purchased the rough stock from Jim Gremel (northern California). During his previous session with this tree he created shari and selected branches.

00:00:40 Close-up of big cuts and stripping of bark.

00:01:10 Eric decides to concentrate on creating a 10-12 inch tree because of interesting taper.

00:01:45 Selection and wiring of branches to set further structure into place.

00:02:53 Eric can see where the actively growing lifeline is, and clean-up.

00:03:27 Decisions on whips to keep and those to remove (too far away from the trunk).

00:04:18 Stub reduction and precision bark-stripping.

00:05:15 Explanation for why Eric is keeping a big upper section he plans to remove and carve eventually.

00:05:54 Wiring close-up, to set branches into desired form.

Eric, I write you from Spain, from Madrid, and I'd like to thank you for the things I am learning with you. I am a forest Engeneer and you are always teaching us new ways of understanding trees and, in particular, bonsais. In Spain there are several bonsais Masters but I would say that you are anong the top five in the world with a YouTube open channel. Congrats and THANKS for being so generous with your knowkledge. Regards from the other side of the Ocean.

Nice job carrying on with Jim's work. He was a very talented guy and his contributions to REBS and bonsai in general were significant. Sad he's unable to do bonsai anymore.

Lotta potential in this piece. I am always impressed with older junipers that have so many different designs possible. Thanks for posting. Your videos are always highly informative and instructional.
