Cross Stitch 101: Loop Start | Embroidery Tutorial

Loop starts are the single best way to start off your thread if you're using more than two strands. They allow you to avoid tangles, snarls, and knots on the back of your project, by looping the thread around itself.

Hey there! This video presents ideas and methods intended to help new and experienced stitchers find new methods of doing their craft. There is no right or wrong way to be creative or make art. If this works for you, I'm glad it helped! If you have questions, please ask! If you don't like this method, please move on. These comments are not a place to tell others what the "correct" way may or may not be.

I started cross stitching as a hobby a couple of months ago and this helped me quite a lot. Thanks so much!

I just started cross-stitching. I did a beginner kit with the tail-securing method and it got really ridiculous how much of a pile I had to go through near the end of it. Such a mess.

So I just started a new pattern, and used the one-strand-into-three loop start you showed and the back of it is so nice! It saves more thread too. Thank you for explaining it so clearly!

Thank you for the tip.
I was prepared to take 3 individual strands, somehow stitch them all on the bottom, and just avoid pulling the three loose strands out the needle loop. This creates a situation where not only can it be secured on the back, but the one loose strand through the needle eye becomes under tension from the duo string loop, keeping it in place. Genuine thank you.

Good information I hadn't seen anywhere else before! I used the two stranded knot-loop method on my beaded piece with variegated threads to make sure it was more secure for the beading, and because you can't double over the variegated thread on itself and keep the like colors together.

This method looks really easy to do.  I have been doing it the old fashion way for a very long time.   So now I'll be giving this method a shot.  Thank you very much.

Hello, I just started watching your videos and they are a great help, thank you. I have a question for you, when you finish. Do you always use the fish tail technique? Is there any other? And also, I don’t have a frame, so I work by hand, should I start my project from the top or from the bottom on is it the same thing? The ones I’ve made I always start in the middle but if it is too big I easily get lost. Thanks a lot.
