TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 72 bpm Lento (slow), but this piece will benefit hugely from being played rubato (with freedom and stretching of time) because the phrases generally need to sound calm, loose, and sentimental. The tempo I played at would be close to the maximum speed needed - any faster and it would sound rushed. A nice smooth legato touch is required throughout and dynamics are straightforward, although some pedal markings are written in, so be careful to play them correctly.

Watch out for the “big rall.” (slowing down) at bar 20 - this could be played even slower than how I played it - the direction a tempo (back to original tempo) then arrives at bar 21, although the use of rubato once again is probably a good choice in the closing bars. Dynamically there are no markings at the end, so mf seems the most suitable option, given that this was the last marking at bar 21 and a fairly big sounding ending seems appropriate.
