Peter, when hiking and if you are to put on your headphone, I highly recommend using only 1 earbud. This is for both you and others' safety. i.e. With one earbud you can hear the rattlesnake rattles, and the rattlesnakes can be very active on some trails in SoCal between April - Oct.
