Parts Shortage

Why is my porch empty

1. Thanks to both National Parts Depot and Auto Kraftrs for sponsoring our shows. With out their support, we’d be flipping burgers and asking if you want fries with that. Also thanks to our Patreon supporters.

2.Where are my parts?
Don’t blame the suppliers.
It’s our fault. Starting in April of last year people found that, since they couldn’t go anywhere they had tons of time on their hands, kids they needed to either engauge or get away from and projects they needed to complete both on tehir cars and their houses.

Unprecedented amounts of money was spent on home improvement projects and classic cars. Not to mention firearms and ammunition. And probably prepper supplies.

Ad to that the inablility to “move about the country” as we are accustomed to, meaning no car shows and no vacations. There was suddenly a lot of money in the bank.

And lets not forget the stimulus checks…

There was a lot of clicking and ordering going on.

3. More parts!
Don’t blame the Manufacturers
Manufacturing has remained pretty steady, it once again boils down to demand. We are buying a lot more products and the supply can’t keep up.

For instance. Tremec released the new TKX at the first of the year and almost immediately went into a 6 week back order.

Similarly place like Eaton Detroit Spring, who manufacture all of their products here in the US, are also back logged with orders.

It often boils down to bits. RRS-USA uses KYB shocks made in Taiwan—the shock is sold out world wide. More are on the way but it will take a minute for the shock company to get back on it’s feet.

I’m in the UK and as soon as we got told to work from home last year, I used that as an excuse to buy pretty much every single part I needed to restore my 67 Mustang Fastback.

parts to rebuild my Engine, New Transmission from MDL, new suspension from OpenTracker Racing, new rear end from Quick Performance, new Driveshaft, new Brakes from CSRP, new Wheels from American Racing, new Interior and SO ON... so I can imagine there are plenty of people in the same boat as me who have all contributed to this mess!

I am a mechanic for one of the major shipping companies and have seen this first hand. We are having problems getting parts for 2020 model year vehicles. Mostly GM but others as well. On top of the B/O’s is the delays in shipping, just because our system has been at Christmas shipping levels at times. Then throw on top of that the snow and ice apocalypse over a month ago, that shut down the middle third of the country. So, since I can’t get parts and I don’t feel like doing home improvements I’ll go do the see ya I gotta go!!!!

I own a small Mustang parts and restoration shop in the California Bay Area and I am going to suggest to my customers to watch this video. People do not understand that the manufacturers are having a tough time getting materials to make their products. Especially anything made out of plastic, nylon, vinyl or anything petroleum based. The plastics industry has ground to a halt. Metal products have also slowed considerately. Not to mention the fact that large companies like NPD and other large suppliers get their orders first and us small mom and pop shops get bumped aside so the big boys get their orders fist. There is a lot that goes into some items and yes you are correct in saying if one company runs out of a part that is in an assembly, production stops. This video explains most of the problems. Customers that are used to the I want it now mentality are just going to have to wait. Well done and well explained.

Working on our wife’s 65 Mustang and our 68 Cougar and parts are taking longer to come in. Also, we are painting the interior of our home and interior paint 🎨 is in short supply. We didn’t think 🤔 COVID-19 was the issue. Thanks for the insight. Keep your videos coming.

Thanks for the reality check Jeff. +1 on your assessment. I’ve just started ordering stuff much earlier than I actually need to just to ensure I have it when it’s time. But I do have more boxes laying around as a result 😋

Fel-Pro, due to the state of Illinois and their non-scientific Whuflu policies, is basically running a skeleton crew. I have had a rear main seal on back order before Black Friday and it is not expected before July. This is not a hoarding issue.

Jeff, I would also warn that pricing is going to be making some significant jumps. I’ve received whole sale lists from vendors that have made me wince. Seat covers, sheet metal, and suspension parts doubling in price. There will be vendors that disappear and leave the industry scrambling to manufacture a part that only that vendor produced. Retooling costs are spiking as well due to mandatory quantity demands.

Well said! It's easy to get frustrated (at least for me personally) and want to look for something else to blame. I used to work in the food industry and it was always amazing to me the people who would be fine, upstanding citizens until they ran into an issue with their food and decided to unload on one of the waitresses (who didn't even make the food). Because of that, I'm usually pretty slow to get upset when service is subpar when there are perfectly good reasons for it (excessive customers, short-staffed, etc.) I really appreciate that you take the time at the end of videos to remind us to take that step back and remember that people are people and deserve to be treated with basic dignity. Keep up the great work!

February I called all the local parts houses here where i lived looking for a generic universal muffler. There were none to be had. I live in a suburb of a large pop 985k population and no one had a universal muffler. They told me 3 to 10 days. SMDH!

I know the Holley Sniper EFI unit I ordered is still on backorder. We are now over 6 weeks on that. Holley is still not sure when it will be shipped. The computer industry is having the same issue as well. The silicon dies are just hard to get. The plants that make those are running 100% plus production rates where they normally run at about 80%. So as you were saying the demand has gone way up and they just can't produce more. They are building new plants and expanding existing ones but that takes time.
