An ex was an extremely smart woman but showed extreme cruelty to commas. I rescued more tortured commas from paragraph sized sentences than I can relate from her masters dissertation. Me and the Commas (potential garage band there) were so proud when she got a distinction.

I am so irrationally afraid that a professor would say something of this caliber to me that I've had immense trouble writing papers. I like to think "better for something to be turned in than nothing at all" but some deep dark part of my mind says "but then they'll tell you how awful you did"

The best part is I can totally understand the professors frustration. Why you ask? Well its simple. A good, clean, high quality research paper is a swift and enjoyable grading experience. A messy and poorly done paper takes hours upon hours to go through and analyze/correct.
By all accounts the paper WAS a hostage situation and his free time was the hostage.

I once heard a professor criticize a student's English paper by saying, "This isn't writing. It is typing." Ouch!

In high school 60 years ago, I was a pretty good writer: good vocabulary, the text flowed nicely, no punctuation or grammar errors. This got me through most essay questions on exams just by the comparison to less literate classmates, even though I might know little or nothing about the topic of the question. This worked well for me... _until_ I got my exam paper back where Mr. Buzby had skimmed through my beautifully written answer and circled in red every *_fact_* I had put down. There were depressingly few of them, and he graded the paper only on the red circles.

Lesson learned and well-remembered six decades later. I thank you for that, Mr. Buzby.
