This incident reminds me of my grandfather:
My maternal grandfather was an army officer, and he was always full of energy and enthusiasm. One day, my uncle brought home a German Shepherd puppy, just 1 month old at the time. My grandfather loved her like his own child. Whatever he ate, he would give her from his own plate. When we would suggest giving her something else, he would say, “Natidi (my granddaughter), who knows in what form she has come to us... maybe she’s an ancestor who has returned to us.” The day my grandfather passed away, she cried continuously. His body was inside, but she would climb the stairs and look towards the terrace, crying a lot. When we asked the priest why she was crying, he explained that the soul stays around for 13 days, and she could see his soul. She stopped eating and would sit beside my grandfather’s bed, crying. Every time the doorbell rang, she would run to the gate, but when she didn’t see my grandfather, she would come back and start crying again.

I used to be scared of her, but during those days, I felt really bad for her because it was my grandfather who took care of everything for her. When my grandfather was alive, she used to eat 3-4 times a day—milk and bread, chicken, samosas, different varieties of dog food—she ate everything. She would sit on his lap, sleep on the bed or sofa with him in an air-conditioned room. She was a bundle of joy, bringing happiness to everyone. But since my grandfather passed away, my uncles have ruined her life. Now, they give her food only twice a day, and that too just lentils and rice. We feel really bad for her. My younger uncle still takes care of her, but she belongs to my older uncle, and they only brought her home for show. No one plays with her anymore.

Whenever we visit my grandfather’s house, we play with her, and she is so happy because she has us with her. We feed her 3-4 times a day. One day, I got into a fight with my uncle, saying, “You all take care of your own meals, but why doesn’t anyone think about her? If Bubu (grandfather) were still here, you’d all stay in line.” Today, it has been 3 years, 2 months, and 3 days since my grandfather passed away.
