I don't really think it is wise to chose after price. You really should make your first choice considering the form factor. If you want a big laptop, you want a big laptop. So the 13" Air and 14" Pro are out. Then you should make your choice between the 16" Pro and the 15" Air, if you want the ports, the weight and all that come with the Pro or if the Air is enough. If the Air is enough spec it like you want it. Don't make compromises and don't consider the 14" for being so damn close price-wise, just because your perfect laptop is the 15" Air in full spec. Otherwise you will always regret your choice, I am pretty sure.

I think the M1 air is more than a holdover from the past. It's really cheap (for an Apple product, and for a laptop of such quality), and it is very often on sale both online and in department stores.
It's the perfect device to get someone to dip their toes into the Apple ecosystem. I've seen it 30% off online recently, and 35% in a department store. It's just so easy to recommend, or even to buy as a gift for, say, father's day or a birthday of a kid or SO.

Or you can pick up a 14" MBP M2 Pro refurb from Apple for $1699 as of this morning 6/16

One of my guiding principles is, "there is no right price for the wrong product." Make a list of minimum requirements ( screen real estate, RAM, storage, processing power - CPU and GPU) then buy the machine that meets or exceeds it for the least cost.

I think rhe M1 Air, even three years later, is still the go-to for regular people who just want a small Macbook.

I think the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro remains in lineup to be sold in bulk (at reduced per unit price) for enterprise and educator customers. It’s sturdy, small and light, and reliable. Consumers may also find great deals (often later in cycle) with higher config. I have the older M1 version with 16GB/1TB, bought about two months before M2; it was an amazing deal and it’s the best Mac I’ve owned by far. I’ll keep using it at least until M3, probably longer.

I love the 15" air but I can't compromise on RAM and storage. I need at least 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. I had to get the 16" Pro. It also has the best battery life.

Honestly I’m the person you talked about last. I just wanted the Air 15 form factor, to me it’s the perfect laptop. Thin and light, well built, stays cool and I can actually use it on my lap as a laptop. I bought a fully speced out Air 15. I don’t need the power and weight of the pro but wanted something that would last me awhile. Traded in my Air 13, and got the education discount. I regret nothing.

I just recieved the 16GB/512GB 15in air with the education discount. I was originally going to get the refurbished 14 pro but after taxes I couldn't justify spending $1800 for the pro features I really don't need. And I'm glad I made that decision because the 15in air is ridiculously portable but still powerful.

M1 Pro 16in’ user here. The size was paramount. And the size really isn’t as big as people make it out to be. The laptop is still pretty thin and light for what it is. I used to daily drive XPS 15s and that thing definitely felt like a chunky bastard.

Last fall, I bought the 14" Pro over an upgraded 13" M2 Air, even though I wanted the Air's design and portability because the 14" was on sale. The problem? I never notice or use the extra features of the 14" Pro, so I just ended up with a computer that was not what I really want. The 14" Pro is great if you're a professional that's going to use the extra features, but those extra features don't actually add value if you never use them. If having the portability of the Air is going to have immediate, noticeable benefits, but the extra features of the Pro model are not, I would advise someone to just get what really want and not worry so much about how close the price is. I would rather pay more for something I really want than pay less for something I'm not entirely happy with.

For prosumers, the 14” is definitely the best option for portability and power, however the 15” MBA is targeting average consumers who want or need a larger laptop for whatever reason and I think it’s a great device for both size and portability. It’s £1, 800 for 16gb ram and 512gb storage compared to £2, 700 for the base 16” MacBook Pro model, so I think it’s a pretty good price

The reason I’m comparing the prices between the 15” MBA and the 16” MBP is because most people interested in possibly buying the 15” MBA probably aren’t interested in smaller laptops

I agree with your comparison between the MBA 15 and the MBP 14. Once you spec up the Air you are in Pro pricing territory and the Pro offers so much more for the money. However, I think the base MBA 13 and 15 will meet the needs of most people.

Since I already have a 13” M2 MBA, I’m going to say that’s the best value for me since I don’t have to change anything and I’m good. 🙂

For me it’s the 14” all day at that 1750. Which has been my delema trying to figure out what to get for ny first mac to complete the only thing missing in my apple ecosystem. I really love the new airs, and even the m1 I’ve always liked. But i keep coming back to the 14” base model every time because it has the best price/performance balance along with a ton of other conveniences at a really good price. Unless you’re talking about the base models of the airs which are an amazing value and they might just be enough for me at the moment. But i have a ton of things i want to get into possibly in the future like possibly going to school for graphic design or doing 3d rendering, editing videos or playing games….. or maybe I’ll never actually do them and just surf the web and do light gaming and video editing. But if i ever do want to i might not have enough space or power or storage/ram to do it. Maybe I’ll only do a little of it and could get by with the airs performance. But I’m still going to want to atleast have a ram upgrade, plus the fact the ssd’s slower on the 256. Probably is fast enough for me and i could get by with an external drive but it would still bug me. Anyways there’s my scatter brain rant lol. Also there’s one more thing ive thought of too and thats the m2 max mac studio with an air for travel and when i dont need the power. But maybe in the future when i can actually afford to have both of these devices one is already pushing it for me. So again that’s why i still say the base 14” with a dock and monitor is the best way to go for sure. Then you have something powerful and portable at a decent cost. Then upgrade later on if you need or want a more powerful and permanent desktop setup. Ok ok I’m done for sure this time 😂😂 thanks. Keep up the great content luke!

I've used the 14 inch m1 mbp and battery life has been great so far! I use it for QGIS and paraview mainly for schoolwork and it works like a charm.

Depends on what you are using this for. :D
My wife always says 13" MBA is the best based on the portability (even with the base config - yes she is happy as she just browses internet and watches movies).
I always prefer a 16" MBP even for the base model as I like having the biggest screen possible in a portable device and that little extra muscle flex.

I picked the 14inch MacBook Pro. I was torn between specking up an Air or getting Pro. I think I made the right choice, the 120hz refresh rate and an onboard SD Card slot is worth the extra. I do a lot of things with photography and videography and the ports being built in is amazing.

if i was choosing between these machines, id either go with a 13" air or a 14" pro, the portability is a lot more intriguing to me than screen real estate and in both cases id opt to keep the binned parts and just upgrade storage, because the difference in performance isnt enough to waste money on it and upgrading both ram and storage puts you too close to the next uptick (although going with the binned max on the 14 might be worth for the extra encoder hardware)

I’ve been into computing for a little over 30 years now. I just find it funny how back then having a 15 inch monitor was considered big and now you can carry it you.
