Are they palindromic because they need to read the same if the sequence is being processed right to left or left to right? Is there a set reading direction for the microorganisms that "read" them and are there others, or other parts of the reading process where a change in direction is noted?

Where did the CRISPR system originally come from?
The first hint of their existence was made in 1987, when an unusual, repetitive DNA sequence was discovered in the genome of Escherichia coli. This sequence was later defined as CRISPR. The discovery occurred during an analysis of genes involved in phosphate metabolism.
