As a kid I was told if you dug straight down you would end up in China. So clearly, China is trying to reach the house I grew up in.

The Soviets already tried this. It's impossible to go any deeper than they did, because if you get too deep the heat of the Earth's interior will melt any drill bit. I think the Sov's made it to 12 miles.

I believe the Russian record is still the deepest. Someone mentioned it at 12, 000 which is what I remember hearing. I believe they stopped due to issues of heat destroying the drill bit. Once liquid rock or iron is hit I can’t imagine going further.

I heard on the radio about some startup saying that they could drill with microwaves or something, and this was to setup sources of geothermal energy. The method doesn't rely on physical contact thru drill bits, so according to them, it works better because there's no drill bit to wear out prematurely when exposed to the high temperatures.

And we wonder why Iceland, Hawaii, California, Japan, etc. are experiencing volcanic and seismic activity. Simpler: volcanoes are erupting and earthquakes are happening all around the world. If you use a nail to slowly try to drill into an egg, not good for the long term stability of the egg.
