The "moments of vulnerability" part is pretty important IMO

I think people have more trouble creating CLEAR motives rather than relatable ones. Most of the time, the actions of the villain betray who they are set up to be, but they all have relatable motives like revenge, or envy.

I personally prefer villains you can’t relate who are just evil because they can

The only thing I’d watch out for is they can be pure evil and still complex, they don’t have to be super sympathetic, if it fits your other characters/ themes better make them evil and vice versa

How to write a pure evil villain:
-Make them feel no remorse or empathy for others and only care about their goal
-Make them smart and calculated, but also mentally ill, unable to emphasise or feel bad for others
-Make them do something unacceptable that no one would dare to
-Either you make them die in the end losing against the hero, or make them create a endless suffering for the hero

Not me writing a villain character who’s motivation is loneliness and simply wanting to know that they will always have someone on their side. Now make a plot twist where the hero and villain become friends because the hero gets betrayed.

This means that if Death Note were entirely from L’s perspective, Light Yagami would’ve been the most intriguing twist villain in any series EVER.

Reasons and motivations:Avenge his world and using human souls to restore it

Contrast: he kinda looks like the main hero

Moments of vulnerability:thinking about his passed father
