I think it depends on the song and the artist! It’s a super interesting dinner conversation topic though! I’ve always been a melody person but I mean, if you consider Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder, Gangsta’s paradise has the exact same melody but the lyrics are much more powerful and as a result everyone knows the latter and few are aware of the former. Then there are artists like Eminem where lyrics are more important than melody not just for their meaning but using onomatopoeia and sibilance and even using the words as a percussive element. I’m going to be thinking about this for the rest of the week. Great topic! 😊😊

I feel like melody is what makes you remember the song, it’s what makes it stick out, what conveys the emotion, but lyrics are what connect you to the song. There is so, so much beauty in the lyrics as well as the melody.

Lyrics are poems for dissecting and appreciating external to the music. In their context, they’re mostly for percussion and melody, another instrument for the song.

This conversation always leaves out how important lyrics are to the performance of the melody. The listener recites bee bop but the singer recites a personal message. The refinement of the message informs the feeling in the lyrics which gives more to the melody than most listeners realize.

I think both are important. The thing is one’s gonna hit faster than the other. I look at a song similar to an essay - melody’s your hook and it’s gonna win people over but the lyrics are the crux of your argument and what’s gonna ensure the song’s longevity. This applies to anything from fun stuff like the Thong Song to something sentimental like Your Song. Modern music gets the former down pretty well - there’s very few that can also nail the latter.

If you’re doing pop music the melody is more important but if the words are super powerful it always makes it better. But it depends on who is listening because I really pay attention too the lyrics and what the artist is trying to say but other people just want a pop melody and thats most people.

I actually write songs too and the melody. It is so important because before you sing lyrics, you have to have a melody down because then if you forget the melody, the lyrics won’t make any sense so that’s why the melody is really important for anybody who didn’t really understand.❤

For something like ‘Thriller’ your friend has a point, but for deeper material the lyrics are massively important. Listen to ‘America’ by Paul Simon as an example of great lyric writing. The words paint beautiful pictures, it’s like watching a road movie in three minutes.
