UPDATED review of the Producer’s Pride Guardian chicken coop

The manufacturer tells you that you can keep 14 birds in this coop. That’s definitely not accurate. This is still a great chicken coop, but keep in mind the space you need and how many chickens you intend to keep in your coop.

Looks well built. Wow!, problem is location. I can see predators could be a real issue, bears, coyotes and .dogs. Good luck with the adventure. I got 13 chickens in mine. They are half way grown now. They kits are the way to go. The chickens will never complain.

We have had this coop for 2 years. We love it. I started with 2 hens and in April will have a total of 12. That will be the limit for this coop. We used to free range but lost a couple to dogs and hawks, so, we enclosed a portion of a covered pole barn, about 24x20 and put the coop and run in the middle of it. It is working wonderfully!!! I feel very confident that my birds are safe when closed up in the coop at night. We, obviously, have hawks and we have seen evidence of coyotes, but so far so good with any attempted penetration of our enclosure. Back to the coop. It is easy to clean and the girls seem to be able to move around in the mornings before I get out there (usually about 30 minutes after sunrise). We did add 2 nesting boxes, but I am not sure that was necessary. We also added a lower perching bar because one of the girls was injured in the dog attack and she cannot jump up as well as she used to. Overall, we have been very satisfied with this coop and run. For anyone beginning their journey with backyard chickens, I would recommend this coop and run all day!!!

Basically the chickens are locked up at night, or something would eat them.

Good review!
My neighbors got the same coop and it is not at all weasel proof.
I'd probably go with one with harware cloth, instead of the larger cage holes. We've had to add hardware cloth in all the eves, all over the sides and underneath between the "run area" and the henhouse.

I had built the smaller 10×6 option from Fresh-Air Poultry Houses by Prince T. Woods, which is one of the 2 books I would recommend for all poultry keepers. The most adult hens I had at one time was 13, which was approaching max capacity. 60sqft/4 = 15, so your number of 4-6sqft per bird sounds about right. I also built it on a deck with 18" of clearance underneath and closed that in as part of the run. That gave them an additional 60sqft of outdoor space they could use even when it was raining. Raising it off the ground helped limit mice problems as well. Chickens eat mice, but Mickey and company will still nest under the deep litter. Also using his fresh air, passive solar design I never once got any frostbite on combs or wattles in 10 years of northern Illinois winters without any heating provided. A friend that closed in his coop like a modern home and provided electric heat had cases of frostbite every single year, so I'm a believer in the Woods design. Here in the south now where winters are very mild, I'll skimp on the passive solar elements to save on material costs and easier construction, but will certainly make sure the seemingly excessive ventilation aspects remain.

Just sharing some thoughts in case you decide to build in the future. My apologies to your hardworking husband for suggesting more projects 😉

If the section closest to the coop was enclosed with something and more roost added yes. It could house up to ten. I would purchase another section of run and add on ro the existing one

So I guess it’s not big enough for my 17 birds! Glad I watched the video!

It’s a good looking coop you can always build some more or you can always add onto it ❤

Question - from the back of the coop to the front of the run, how long is it? And how wide is it? I’m considering this one and want to be sure it’ll fit. The measurements on the website leave me wondering if it’s coop & run measurements or not. Figured I’d ask someone with one :) 💚

They don’t stand behind their products. My roof rotted. They couldn’t replace it for me. But if it was under warranty they could. I was willing to pay for it. They said no. Ridiculous
