#BeyondExplained

The purpose of a littoral combat ship (LCS) is to operate in the littoral zone, which refers to the near-shore waters and coastal areas. Littoral combat ships are designed to conduct a variety of missions in these environments, combining versatility, speed, and shallow draft capabilities. Littoral combat ships are capable of engaging surface targets, such as enemy ships or small boats, using various weapons systems. They can employ naval gunfire, missiles, or other anti-surface warfare weapons to counter threats in littoral waters.

Littoral combat ships can also operate in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) missions. They are equipped with sonar systems, torpedoes, and helicopters to detect, track, and engage enemy submarines in the littoral zone. it also has the ability to detect, localize, and neutralize sea mines and underwater explosive devices. They are equipped with mine-hunting sonar, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and other specialized equipment to conduct mine countermeasures operations.

This was the most expensive program for the US navy that never achieved design requirements before going into full production across two shipbuilding companies where interchange of modules was not even possible due to size differences.

Fun Fact:
The littoral-ship is out looking for the man-in-the-boat.

Coastal warfare is synonymous with littoral combat.

I don't think you will find may subs in littoral, shallow waters. Maybe mini subs, but even the smallest attack sub isn't going into such shallow water.

The purpose of this ship is to waste taxpayers money but profit the defence industries.

Aestetically these ships are absolutely gorgeous, their design looks so sharp, menacing, modern...
On paper they have a great versatility ad the idea to begin with was good.
The implementation, however, left something to be desired...

I had the privilege of helping build the LCS-3. Or, the "independence" as the navy named it. It was a massive ship and EXTREMELY fast to be as big as it is.

Omg FINALLY a ship that is LITERALLY for combat. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The LCS is also extremely prone to getting hit with a Surface to Air Missile. The Aluminum shell of the LCS is no match for a SAM.

I'll look into getting a local slip to keep one for myself. 😁

It's a fever dream of the early '00's that concluded that what makes a warship a warship come be condensed into a shipping container and stored below decks.
