Thank you Michael. This is much better than the approach I was using.

If you wanted to have the name color-coded, you could have the text-string student names in a column off to the right somewhere with the random number. In the columns you want the students to "see" you could use a simple "=cellref" function with the cell reference columns being highlighted in colors. If you want it to look totally magical you could make the text-reference column with the student names and the random number column formatted with white font.

Thanks! I kept looking for websites or software to make random groups but this is easier =)

I know Google Sheets handles it this way, but I didn't have time to test on Excel, but if you Conditionally Format the cells to the desired color based on the criteria "cell is not empty", those conditions are set to the specific cells in an absolute manner and not relatively so sorting will leave (in your example) cells H4:H7 formatted to x color as long as there is a value inside.

Hi,
Put this into cell A2: =RANK.EQ(B2, B:B, 0)
Put this into cell B2: =RAND()
Then expand them both downwards to get a random number from 1 to how long you make the list

Mine don't give me a new random number when I click a field and then enter. It only happens when I re-sort. Did I miss a step?

Is there a way to eliminate the possibility of having two or more of the same people appear in the same group when you randomize?
