Why Did Israel Build a Wall Around the West Bank?

[Note: This video was created before the horrific attack by Hamas on the people of southern Israel and the outbreak of the October 2023 war.]
The separation barrier that divides the West Bank from western Israel, often referred to as the Apartheid Wall, is the source of much debate in both Israeli and Palestinian societies. For some, it serves to protect Israeli citizens. For others, it enforces an unequal system of oppression of Palestinians. And while for many it is simply a visual reminder of the continued failure of the peace process, Israel remains a land of hope.

I think the question has already been answered. Why run in a circle in the conclusion? The wall reduced suicide bombing deaths and the Palestinian leader admitted that it was an obstacle to their actions. It is there for the security

Because Arafat never really wanted peace...600 millions in his Swiss Bank account wasn't enough...

Geez, I can't be the only one that remembers all the bus bombings and other acts of terrorism .... That wall has made a HUGE difference.

When you have a bloodthirsty hate filled enemy you do what you have to do.

I remember bombings before the Wall. It has become a necessity. When a non Bibi government happens, Palestine can not be negotiated (there is no partner) but imposed as has been the case with many conflicts.
Neither Jew or Arab will get all they want but this is true with all conflicts. Religion is what makes conflict so explosive. This and poor Palestinian leadership saying no Jew can remain in a Palestinian state which 20% of Israel is Arab. A partner for peace can not demand double standards

Anti terror barrier seems like a good term . Blaming a wall for an entire country’s failings is dumb . Palestine has beachfront property and decent weather why can they take advantage of this and make something of themselves as opposed to just letting terrorists rule them and live in squalor I think they need to grow a pair of balls and start weeding out the problem from within instead of blaming other people for their problems.

Definately security barrier. Just imagine what would have happened without it. They are all complicit, no excuses. One should stand up and take responsibility sometimes.

Thank you for bringing the palestinian prospective.

The Quran actually never mentions Jerusalem once. The Arabs basically just valued it because the jews did and they were In Competition with the jews

It is crazy when you dig a bit and learn about the whole situation... I am very concerned about future perspectives in the region, as many ppl I assume.

So much has been put out of the equation in the US-Israël relations, so much suspicion and animosity, such incapacity of working together during the crucial post Oslo treaty period...

I mean... it is a litteral geopolitic hell of a mess now more than ever, and litteraly EVERYONE in power there from every side seem to contribute to chaos rising in the region. And have been doing so for decades now.

No surprise hell is letting loose today 😔

The wall reduced terrorist attacks from about 200 *per year* for 5 years (including dozens of bus bombings) to zero
There was no other way - dozens of Israeli court cases described agonising considerations of exactly where it should go and how to balance the security needs whilst maximising the rights of the Palestinian population

I think the greatest achievement today would be to bring true peace..Both sides happy and thriving..Can it be done?

I pray that Hashems will be done! Not the will of any human! it is clear no human can really bring peace, only the creator! Shalom!

I didn´t know they killed Rabin because he wanted peace, That means there are extremists in both sides. The problem is that Israel has an army, so Palestinians are not going to win this, and when you realize that you are not going to win, you need to negotiate a good deal. The US stole half of Mexico. Did we commit suicide bombs to resist the invasion? Not at all. We fought until the end, and accepted defeat. Now the South West is mostly Mexican again, but we want to be both Mexican and American. We like this country; there is less corruption and more rule of law. It´s a win-win for everyone. The US needed our labor, and we needed better wages. Now we are part of this country, respect its laws, share its values, we have fought in all its wars, and receive more decorations than any other ethnicity in proportion to our numbers.

I kept wondering when you posted this. It was October 11. One today would include a section of how oct 7th was needed more. Or proves it was a complete failure

Fair enough but at this point in time Israel is under no legal obligation to return the West Bank or any part of the land to Palestinians. But in 2000 they did offer almost all of the West Bank back to them. Of course there were some highly prized land they wanted to keep. But still, beggars can't be choosers. They've lost every war. I have no problem with the idea of a Palestinian state and while I'm sure some of them would be OK living in peace with Jewish neighbors, so many times in history, enough of them were not willing to allow this to happen. I don't understand why some people here in the West, who ridicule and castigate you, if you are intolerant towards others, are OK with the fact that many Palestinians have zero tolerance for a Jewish state.

As an independent opiner, I see one side as terrorists and the other side as Nazis.
Two equally horrible things with innocent civilians in between
