Went to a screening of 2001 last weekend at the Mus of the Moving Image in Queens. After the film, they had a guy named Piers Bizony give a great lecture on the making of the movie and he talked about how Kubrick used Ligeti's composition for the film without permission. Ligeti supposedly talked about himself in the 3rd person and said something like "Well, Ligeti doesn't like his music to be used in commercial ventures." Kubrick's agent at MGM talked to Ligeti and told him that his record sales would get a boost from the film and it worked.

The spirit of Bartok pervades throughout this piece as well as other movements of Ricercata which is a masterpiece, thank God my imagination is not affected by Kubrick’s films when listening to Ligeti’s music which I discovered before Kubrick!
