I love that Ligeti could be crazyily dissonant, but in moments like this, achieve such beauty, yet complexity in simplicity.

I performed this the other month as part of a program of small pieces. Absolutely delightful piece. I've tackled some heavy repertoire, but pound-for-pound this is easily the most difficult piece I've ever taken to the stage. Unless that septuplet ostinato is mastered to the point of subconscious instinct, burned into your motor cortex, you WILL lose focus and you WILL stumble. The right hand line is deceptively challenging as well, with the counterpoint demanding some extremely knotty fingerings. Anyway, this piece was a fascinating project - minimalist yet deep, abstract yet approachable - and I had a lot of fun working on it.

Ligeti was humourously 'dismissive' of his Music Ricercata cycle ("the over conceptualized hubris of a young composer" or some such) - but I love the bare bones concept of all the pieces - and the first time I heard No.7, I thought it was among the most beautiful pieces of music I had ever heard (and still do). I agree that Ligeti is not quite accorded his due as a 20th century composer.

It's amazing that he is able to play his right hand so gracefully with such intense movement happening in the left hand. Love this piece, and the wind quintet version.

That reminds me of a great Charles Mingus quote that really captures why this piece is so cool: "Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple."

This is such a beautiful melody but keeping that left hand going all the way through the piece must be torture!

I'm on my knees... the part with two-voice imitative counterpoint just killed me. You, Sir, were a genius of our time!!!

Me gusta, me encanta...Un ostinato rítmico como un viento suave pero constante y por encima una melodía suave, ligera, como un goteo anunciando la lluvia que vendrá.

Honestly this is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve ever heard. Almost spiritual in a way. It must sound like hell and hand cramps for pianists though

Wonderful, love the ostinato in 7, it s the the ground, the earth and the melody is the sky and at the end it s like the horizon, sky and the earth are joining together. Thank you Radio France Musique to make me discover Ligeti.

It sounds like a Nintendo's 80's game... Great piece!

You gon' take your left hand outside, and you're gonna plunge it deep into the snow where it's gonna steam for a while.

This is indeed one of the few "modern" compositions that create a new mood and way of expression and deserve to be listened. Deep, mysterious, and beautiful, this ethereal piece is a masterpiece on its own universe.

Certainly no walk in the park for the left hand.

I swear Ligeti's brain had been split.

When I was a little child and my piano teacher tried to get me to do half an hour of scales and arpeggios per day... if she'd played this I would would never have stopped. LOL! I bet she couldn't play it though... this takes incredible "chops".
