Configuring L2TP VPN in Windows Server 2016

Steps required to configure a L2TP VPN in Windows Server 2016
- Install Routing and Remote Access with DirectAccess and VPN
- Configure Routing and Remote Access with VPN and NAT
- Configure pre-shared key
- Configure static address pool
- Configure NAT for the network interface (127.0.0.1 as private address)
- Create firewall rule to allow L2TP inbound connections
- On the client machine, create a VPN connection, use L2TP as a type of VPN with the pre-shared key configured in Routing and Remote Access, use require encryption for data encryption, use Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) and Microsoft CHAP version 2,
- In Active Directory Users and Computers, create an organization unit with a group dedicated for VPN users and create users and assign them to the new group
- In Network Policy Service, create a policy that allows VPN access to the specified group created in Active Directory Users and Computers
- Verify VPN connectivity
