Water Softener INSTALLATION COST

You need a water softener for your family but how much will it cost to have it installed? What determines water softener installation cost and are there options you should consider? How much could you save by doing it yourself or do you need a licensed plumber to handle the installation?

A basic installation of a water softener costs about $300 but it can vary on a number of factors like:
1) Is your plumbing copper or pex plastic. Pex is easier and less costly to work with than copper but if you have copper pipes it can be converted to pex for the water softener installation part and then go back to copper
2) Do want to bypass your outside faucets? When a water softener is installed, all water down stream will become softened but you may want to bypass the outside faucets under certain conditions. If you do a lot of lawn watering or gardening you may prefer to use untreated water. Irrigation systems are typically bypassed but if the sprinklers spray hits your windows you might want to use treated water to make sure you don’t get staining or water spots. Also, if you use the water from your outside faucets for car washing you will be better off with treated water. Bypassing outside faucets requires running a water line from before the connection to the water softener to the piping going to the faucet.
3) How much plumbing is involved? Sometimes due to space limitations or the configuration of your install location the water softener needs to be located a distance from where the water comes into the home or from the drain connection which may require additional piping, usually running about $5 per foot.
4) Do you have an old water softener that is being replaced? The cost to remove and dispose of that old water softener can easily be $100 or more especially if the brine tank is full of clogged salt.
5) If you’re having several pieces of equipment installed in addition to the water softener like a reverse osmosis drinking water system or chlorine filter, the second and third items are usually discounted if you’re having them installed at the same time.
So the bottom line is about $300 for a basic installation assuming you need about 20 feet of pipe including the drain line. Add about $5 per foot for extra piping and bypassing if needed and another $100 or so for removal and disposal of any equipment being replaced.
Either way, understanding what’s involved and planning the installation ahead of time will make sure you get what you need and save your family money!

I installed a complete extra bathroom after watching some YouTube video`s. Pex is easy and I`m glad you included the need for a special tool and clamps in the cost.
The hardest part is always the first step. You can always call a Pro but you may have to wait in line for a few weeks.

For any one that want a pretty clear picture of price painted. I am a plumber that just installed a softener at my house. I had to run the piping from the service above grade to the other side of my side yard fence which was about 15’ of total pipe used. The material alone was 300 bucks and I already owned the large group of tools you’ll need. It it took about 8 hours to complete. My personal opinion on total price from a plumber would have been (labor and material only) about 1200 bucks. Keep in mind that’s a price for quality craftsmanship and if you pay for that it should look like that.

Definitely not a $300 job you can’t even get a handyman to plumb a water softener for that price. I would love for you to personally come tie onto the 1-1/4 water main i have plumb the whole softener, setup programming and all for $300

I just installed an AC Smith Whole House Water Softener and have regular rock salt in it, but I want to change over to salt pellets. Some one (at a big box store) told me you can't mix the to different kinds. I don't know if that is true or not, but is it? and if it is true, is there a procedure to make the change over? Thanks

Great video and information Gary, thank you!! I envisioned a proper new soft water system install (in a basement) to involve replumbing of the water lines to NOT send conditioned water to the kitchen sink (cold), ice maker line and outdoor sill cocks. To do it “right”, wouldn’t the additional plumbing system reconfiguration need to be added into the equation? And such, significantly more time and cost (if hired) to run the system correctly? Gary I have a large home and have a well system that water has a very light coloration and (tan) we have been using it this way for years, for everything except drinking and cooking, what’s the price for the water softener and what kind do you suggest

A new installation of a softener could take over half a day. Back in the 90's i would hook up the water and the softener company did the salt tank and discharge

You can also use Shark Bites if you don't want to solder. You might have to sweat a joint off, but not much more than that.

Copper is easy to work with. The plastic lines are junk.
