Most of the people I've worked with had this sort of meanness in them. The handful that were decent I really appreciated, but they also tended to be targets for bullies.

I could never buy into the premise of this world because the people depicted here suffer from a lack of impulse control more than an inability to tell lies. In the “Eragon” book series the main character meets some magical elves who speak a language in which it’s impossible to lie and the way the elves navigate society is through telling half truths or just lying by omission. For example, if someone asks you if you like their dress and you think it looks ugly you can get around it by pointing out one specific thing you do like about the dress like “I like the color of the dress” as opposed to just flat out saying it looks ugly. I think that book did a much more realistic job of depicting how a society would work if lying was impossible.
