Chrysler reinvevted its popular performance coupe, the Plymouth Barracuda, in 1970. A year later, it underwent a slight facelift, going to a 4-lamp headlight design. With this, the 'Cuda, known for the simplicity of this look, lost a little of its uniqueness as it grew closer in apperance to its sister car, the Challenger. With several appealing engine options, the new 'Cuda had to be slightly revised because of the Muskie (Clean Air) Act. This forced the automakers, including Chrysler, to remove big engins from their vechicles in order to meet the strict emission requirements.
As a consequence, 1971 was the last model year to include 'Cudas with engines larger than 383 cu. in., arguably the very engines that made the 'Cuda what it was. The 'Cudas equipped with 426 Hemis were made in such low numbers that their sales volume were never high, but the 440 6 Pack configuration model, witch logged record sales of more than 1000 units the previous year, saw a sharp decline in sales because of the new laws. Total production numbers for the 1971' Cuda 440 5 Pack totaled a mere 254 units, with the rarest version (at only five units) being the convertable equipped with the manual transmission. These 1971 Plymouth 'Cuda with 440 6 Pack and the 426 Hemi have become extremly popular with collectors around the world and carry astronomical price tags.
