Ring released its Gen 2 system in November of 2021, but what changed with that update? We compare the original Ring Alarm system to its new Ring Pro counterpart. The devices look different, but are they just as effective at keeping you safe?

Ring is among our favorite DIY home security systems since it works with so many other devices! Along with its dozen cameras, you can also connect it with other Amazon products or your Google Nest speaker.

Pros: entire Wifi network cellular backup for when internet down - data cap limit. Local as card backup of recordings if paying for cloud storage. Alarm pro is also your gateway router so one less piece of equipment.

Cons: required to be your gateway router to get all the functionality out of it, a possible data privacy issue as Amazon is likely data harvesting. The embedded router is already last generation (eero 6) and will limit network speeds vs using a newer integrated model like eero 6 pro or eero 6E.

I’m sticking with the 2nd gen alarm, no thanks.

* video is wrong: there are three gens of ring alarm. Ring pro is gen 3

How come you missed the biggest difference? The Ring Alarm Pro also has a Eero 6 router built into it, and it also offers local camera storage.

You failed to mention that the Ring Pro comes with a eero6 WiFi6 router built-in and offers cellular backup for devices you chose if your home internet goes down to stay connected (Hence the $20 a month update). I recently had a cable issue in my area where the internet was NOT available or very spotty for several days! The backup cellular was a god-send for me as my devices including SmartThings/cameras, and other devices stayed connected although at lower speeds but still worked as needed. This is where the "PRO" may not be for you @ $20 a month but for me it's exactly what I was looking for a failover option that is fairly inexpensive vs. other failover options out there.

Otherwise I'm using ALL Gen1 devices since installing the system in early 2019! NO compatibility issues whatsoever switching to the Ring Pro hub.

I have read that SOON the Ring Pro will offer a connection link to you phones WiFi hotspot to stay connected in an ISP data interruption. I think this costs more than $20 so we'll see..

Crooks are now cutting your main power/cable lines to your home to gain access to "defeat" your alarm system (I have read MANY articles). This added "Pro" option will still keep your protected and connected. What's more Vivint, ADT, SimplySafe, or others do NOT have this option and still has cheaper monthly prices and NO contracts! Yes, the "other" systems have backup cellular but not as robust to allow NON-system devices to stay connected. AND WAY cheaper than $55+ a month and NO contracts.

Does the Ring alarm have the same privacy issues as the doorbell? Does Amazon give this data to law enforcement? Does Amazon upload this information into their cloud and process at HQ and overseas like the video?

Was listening to this on AirPods Pro 2. The music was overpowering your voice, so consider dialing it back or dropping it all together.
