unarmored combat: stay the fuck away
armored combat: you may kiss

Unarmored combat seems more about generating power and speed, maneuvering around your opponent's sword for a quick and decisive blow. Armored combat looks to focus specifically on the joints where armor is vulnerable, uses the sword like a short spear specifically to jab while overpowering your opponent.

Unarmored combat : striking, kicking and feinting. Looking for reaching the opponent without getting hit.
Armored combat : grappling, wrestling and slamming. Looking for advantaging positions.
I think the differences are similare.

I appreciate the clarification. Armored combat was definitely a lot more like you demonstrated here which was like trying to grapple your point into a gap, throw your opponent to the ground or use your blades percussive areas like pommel hits to the helmet etc.

I wonder how common unarmored longsword fighting was, that wasn't specifically two dudes formally dueling one another.

I appreciate the integrity when “hit” and how much that must add to the fun both parties have

Hey there, german here. ✌️
There is a small misconception here: It's called "Bloss Fechten" and is better translated with "bare fencing"
Other example: "Mit seinen blossen Händen tötete er die Schlange" / "He killed the snake with his bare hands"
The gramatical order is switched in german, but I think you get the point. 😜

The context otherwise is the same, so great explanation and great action examples. Keep it up. 😎👍

God armoured combat looks like it would be terrifying

I'm not usually one to attempt to correct the master, but the "bloß" in "Bloßfechten" is pronounced like "blows", not like "blouse". It means "bare fighting" not "blouse fighting".

As a native German speaker: Bloßfechten

This is why ronin wore their kimono rather than armor in duels, they knew in the 21st century the fictional battles they would inspire would look way cooler without armor

Sorry for the pedantics, but bloß doesn't translate to blouse or shirt. It means merely, just, or only. So a better translation for bloßfechten would be bare fencing or naked fencing. Love the videos though! Keep 'em coming!

Do you guys train any form of grappling? Because I've read that armored combat involved a decent amount of grappling. The reason was that plat armor was so good against slashing and piercing weapons that people tried to take their opponents down and when there mobility was restricted they could try to jam a dagger into any opening. And I would love to see how grappling with weapons/armor would look.

Quick description what is being able to use the sword as a sword due to lack of armour

The other you have to focus on overpowering your opponent and it's just getting the tip of your sword through gaps in their armour

I hate to be the geek here. It is called Bloßfechten and its a german word witch translates to fencing without protection. It comes from the german word "entblößen" what roughly means to take of your clothes....

Four hundred years into the future, people will look at modern firearm warfare just like we’re watching this video.

Can we say that armored combat favors the strongest and unarmored combat favors the most skillful?

I think many modern people don't realize how effective medieval armor was.
