The 18 Fighting Skills That Samurai Trained #Shorts

When you think of samurai, you probably have a strong image of them fighting with a katana. However in reality, the katana was only one of the many weapons and martial arts that the samurai handled among the 武芸十八般 Bugei Jūhappan, the 18 martial art skills.

The 18 martial arts include Ken-jutsu, Iai-jutsu, Kodachi-jutsu, So-jutsu, Naginata-jutsu, Bo-jutsu, Jo-jutsu, Ju-jutsu, Torite, Kyu-jutsu, Ho-jutsu, Ba-jutsu, Sui-jutsu, Jitte-jutsu, Kusarigama-jutsu, Shurikenjutsu, Fukumibari-jutsu, Nin-jutsu, etc.

These are just some examples, and the number 18 just simply means “many” in Japanese. Therefore, it doesn’t mean that all samurai always trained everything.

But why did they train so many things?

It was for them to survive in every possible situation. There might be times when you don’t have your best weapon on the battlefield. Also in daily life they needed skills for self defense and to flee from enemies too.

Samurai in the past did not master only one form of martial art like judo or kendo like today, but it was common for a samurai to be both a jujutsu-ka and a kenjutsu-ka at the same time.

Could you add the little explainations to the specific disciplines in the transcript? Since there is no rewind on shorts, pausing to read each of them is a pain.

When I trained as a swordsman we had a title called Slayer. It was only given to people who could show proficiency in 5 different weapons and styles in the 2 years we were overseen in training. As a result only 7 have had that title across 56 generations with myself being proud to claim the title of Slayer.

Jo-jutsu is so cool and under represented. I've loved it ever since the training scenes in Pacific Rim.

Torite sounds like the adoptive child of the Jutsu family. Also reminds me of that Spongebob meets the Vikings scene 😆

This makes me think of the modern principles of martial arts as well. While I mainly coach boxing, I encourage my students to learn other disciplines too because nothing is more valuable than versatility when it comes to combat, and life in general. It's really interesting to me how principles like that can last so many thousands of years.

I studied Niten Ichi-ryu for a while. Kind of difficult to hang on to the anime image of a samurai when you spend more time learning philosophy than anything else.
