People like the EM in that last story, who refused to learn to speak German after moving to Germany, are more common than you think. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and we get a lot of Asian immigrants here (mostly Chinese and Indian). I have encountered numerous people who have refused to learn the language of their new country and expect their children to grow up learning both languages so that they can act as translators for their parents.

I don't know how things are in Germany, but in larger Canadian cities there are neighborhoods where people of certain ethnicities congregate, and they can interact with each other in their preferred languages (China Town, Little India, etc). Some of them have even been known to call people not of their ethnicity racial slurs right to their faces, usually getting away with it because most non-Chinese don't understand Mandarin or Cantonese. The Chinese equivalent of "The N Word" is calling someone a devil, with a prefix of their skin colour (white devil, black devil, brown devil, etc) and they'll call you that right to your face in their own language. I have a few white friends who speak Mandarin, or at least understand a little, and the look of shock on these entitled peoples' faces when they're told that these "white devils" understood what was said to them is priceless.

Long story short, those types of entitled people are more common than you might think.
