This is how I learned. For plate was taught 8th in land and gap. Was having issues with pen on bottom. Switched to this method and all was lovely

What's a good fit up for sch 40 2"? Its really kicking my butt because it heats up too fast!

Wrap it with bare copper lead and ground to that

Switch to AC current, slap in some 6011, keep on welding. ( while nobody is looking) Takes care of that magnetism.
