Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

This scene is absolutely destroys me. Love, human connection, Gus sacrificed everything that makes life worth living in his chase for revenge.

Gus cannot allow himself to build bonds and have faith in people because of what happened to Max. As soon as he realizes that he's about to do that, he leaves.

This is the moment Gus realised he shouldn't bring his boyfriends to cartel meetings

This is the moment when Gus ghosted his Grindr date

It’s so tragic to see the hopeful gaze in Gus’ eyes fade when he realizes he is unable to form connections outside of his ultimate mission.

Right after he killed the Cartel, he should've gone back to that wine bar and got on with his personal life.

Gus saw a stain in his glass and decided that the whole restaurant is not up to Los Pollos' standards.

Really neat how the last time we see Gus is when he’s at his most vulnerable. But then he realizes he can’t do it. And we know as an audience he will stay locked in until the end

Casting for wine guy was off the charts. Fits so well in this

Peak TV Writing. To choose this scene as a farewell to a man so cold and ruthless as Gus is simply brillant. The first and last time - a glimpse of humanization, of a delicate man, confined in the dark forever. It's so goddamn sad.

4:36 A moment of peace ruined by a realization he's too deep in the game and a quest for vengeance.

"I can't open it, but the bottle itself is... you'll appreciate this."

It's really sweet to see people get the chance to geek out about their favorite thing in the world to a fellow enjoyer of it even if it's scripted in a TV show

Despite everything Gus did, I feel bad for the guy. He never really got over Max and won't allow himself any happiness over fear of letting anyone in considering his line of work. Hector did in a way get the last laugh on him.

Imagine that guy's face when, years later, he learns on the news that Gus Fring got blown up and why.

I love how at the start Gus is clearly guarded, there's a long shot of him glancing down at the bottle rather than listening as if anxiously waiting for it to be poured and the conversation over, but gradually he stops glancing and gets enthralled on what's being said. At least for a short while before he catches himself.

What I love about Better Call Saul is how subtle the storytelling is. You know a man is in love but doesn't allow himself to just by a simple scene.

I'm surprised that a man of such reputation wasn't offered soft drinks of choice

That _’I’m saving it for a special occasion!’_ followed by that mere hint of a raised eyebrow was the most daring move Gus ever made.

People will watch this scene and still think Gus and Max we’re just “Friends”

Gus never healed from Max. To be fair, if someone did that to my wife, I’d never heal either. It’s so sad to see Gus as a charming, passionate, refined, NORMAL person for a change. You can see the connection he has with David (the sommelier), buying the 1978 bottle from a year ago proves there’s something there. The “I would love to hear about it” terrifies him. He can face cartel bosses, large-caliber rounds striking inches from him, (near) lethally poisoning himself, he faces it all with unflinching resolve. There seems to be only one thing he doesn’t have the courage to face: love.
