Asked my dad, he has never heard about this interview question despite working at Goldman. He has told me about a braille rubix cube that they have some analysts try and solve in interviews. And some questions like this he has told me was something like, “How much oxygen does this building and it’s people consume daily?” 😂

Assuming an average pizza is 1 foot in diameter, we can calculate the average perfectly circular pizza to have an area of approximately 0.78 square feet. If the average person has 2 slices of pizza every time they eat pizza, and the pizza is cut into 8 slices, each person will consume 0.196 square feet of pizza each time they get pizza. Let’s say the average person has pizza twice a month, that’s 48 slices of pizza a year per person, or 4.7124 square feet of pizza per person per year. Approximately 300 million people live in the US, meaning we can calculate the approximate square footage of pizza consumed each year to be 1, 413, 720, 000 sq ft.

Bro I would just say "one more", eat the slice, and leave

Well first we need to determine how much pizzas are eaten each year, then determine how many square feet are in a pizza. Then multiply those numbers together

When you dont give the answer or explanation or logic or atleast something sensible its just a waste of 1 minute

there are 329.5 million us citizens. If everyone eats 1 pizza every month (12 in a year), (a round pizza with 32 cm in diameter (=0.32m) -> 804.25cm^2 (=0, 080425m^2)) its:
0, 080425 m^2 * 12 * 329 500 000 =
318000450 m^2
-> 318, 00045 km^2
or 122, 780660162 miles^2
or 3422928356, 27 feet^2

or im stupid and this was all for nothing

Let’s say large pizza is 20”, that makes the area of pizza roughly 2 square feet. There are 300, 000, 000 people in America. Let’s say 10% of the population eats one pizza per week (reasonable). So that’s 30, 000, 000 pizzas per week. In fifty weeks 1, 500, 000, 000 pizzas. Each pizza is 2 square foot, then 3 billion square foot per year

It's not about the right answer! It's about how you approach a question like that. They wanna see how you think and see if your thoughts make sense. Even if your answer is wrong (hell they probably don't know the right answer either) - as long as you explain your thoughts you got the question right.

For example:
1. you need to guess the area of one pizza (pi * diameter/2 square)
2. guess how many pizzas you eat per year and say you take the number as your average number per person, calculate it by the area you calculated in step 1 and use the result as an average area of pizza consumption per year
3. guess the number of people in the USA who eat pizza
4. multiply the number of people times the area you calculated in step 2
5. you got your estimated result

And the question didn't say "how many sqft in total" so you can stop at step 2 and give the result per person and argue that the question didn't say anything about a total number.

Btw. I don't work for Goldman Sachs or any other Bank

The answer is actually 2.4billion as one person in the US will approximately eat 1 square foot of pizza each month so we can say tht there will be 200 million of square feet of pizza eaten each month so we will have to multiply this by 12 months and we get 2.4 billion square foot of pizza which is eaten each year in the US

The whole entire purpose of this interview question is for you to show your thought process. The interviewers don’t care about the actual answer, as long as you are able to put into words your thought process, which is a very important skill in any job
